Public benefits

The benefit which flows from this purpose includes the reduced level of social isolation and breaking down of barriers; addressing root causes of deprivation by signposting those in crisis to community services in their areas; enhanced wellbeing and quality of life of those participating in projects and activities (eg low level intervention care

services supporting independent living, care and repair services, and training and development programmes); enhanced knowledge and understanding through receiving education and vocational training, and the development of individual capabilities, competencies, skills and understanding; strengthening pathways to employment, enhancing people’s employability skills and empowering them to more actively pursue employment. Benefits also include the creation of employment and work experience opportunities, consequently reducing poverty, unemployment and hardship. In essence this purpose addresses some of the root causes of poverty thereby reducing the impact of poverty. These benefits are evidenced through feedback from participants, service users and collaborative working partners on Churches Trust projects, through contract monitoring and review meetings carried out by prime contractors and funding bodies, through qualification and education certificates granted to individuals by awarding bodies, and through employers reporting progress on work placements and through by who have succeeded in obtaining permanent work positions as a result of their engagement with The Churches Trust Limited. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. The beneficiaries of this purpose are people living in the Derry City and Strabane District Council areas, but can also include people in other parts of Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland. A private benefit flowing from this purpose is the salaries paid to staff. However, this benefit is necessary to enable us to co-ordinate and deliver services and to ensure that benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

The Churches Trust was founded by the Leaders of the mainstream churches over 30 years ago in response to a recognition of the level of deprivation in the area and the necessity to work together to provide essential services to those in need. The strategic aims and objectives of Churches Trust are: •to proactively enhance and support the economic,

social and cultural development of all our communities within the North West region •to develop and provide quality services that tackle deprivation and disadvantage focusing on social exclusion, equality of opportunity, and improving community relations •to promote a more united, shared and cohesive society working in collaboration with churches, schools and a diverse range of community groups Our key contributions towards alleviating poverty and inequality include: •Through our Pantry Project, providing food for over 2,500 people (annually) whose individual or family circumstances have reached crisis point; we deliver this service in collaboration with community hubs who work with individuals and families in this situation to address the underlying issues. •Delivering low level intervention care services to older people, throughout the City and in rural communities, providing an average of 900 hours service per month. •Working with people to proactively break cycles of generational unemployment and low education attainment. We offer a toolkit of solutions ranging from certified to uncertified courses, and from education to vocational training and to personal development •Provision of affordable low cost maintenance / handyperson service. The Churches Trust Limited works proactively with a range of stakeholders including other training providers, community & voluntary groups and churches, employers, and statutory bodies and agencies. We engage in a range of good community relations projects and activities providing positive examples of churches united and working together promoting a better shared future for all
