Public benefits

The Haven Christian Centre is a non-denominational organisation which exists to advance the Good News of Jesus Christ nationally as well as internationally, and to share that hope and compassion prayerfully and practically by bringing help to those who seek relief from debt, distress and despair. The benefits that flow from the work of the Haven

are salvation of the soul upon acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, and the relief from the stress and isolation caused by one or many factors. The benefits are evidenced through personal testimony of those who have been helped, and also through the testimony of the families and friends of the individual. The charities beneficiaries are those who genuinely seek help from their personal difficulty. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is the maintenance of the buildings and gardens/fences of the property. As there are catering and residential facilities and a long term lease on the property, this is incidental and necessary.

What your organisation does

What the Haven does. The Haven Christian centre was formed to help those in debt distress and despair. Those seeking help are treated as individuals as every case is unique to itself. The Haven works almost exclusively with men, as there is another shelter locally that only takes in women. There is accommodation ranging from single rooms with

shared facilities to stand alone flats. Some people only need to stay a short time, others for much longer. The Haven offers free counselling. There is a café, which is non-profit making, which acts as a drop in centre. There is a small church which meets three times weekly, twice on the Lords day and for Bible study and prayer on a Wednesday evening. There is a Sunday school during the morning service Part of the rehabilitation of individuals usually involves getting them back into the workplace, and to facilitate this, there is an adjoining farm. The aim is not to make farmers, or to achieve a level of productivity, but to build skills, confidence and self- esteem. The working day is usually 11am to 3pm with an hour for lunch. A lot of who we work with have drunk themselves into poor health before we meet them. Overseas mission is supported financially with a number of the church members having been to the mission field.
