Public benefits

The benefits that flow from our purposes include preservation of and better access to Belfast’s maritime heritage through our charity’s assets namely, Titanic Belfast, SS Nomadic, The Great Light, SoundYard, Riverbox and MaritimeMile.com, which enhances knowledge and appreciation of Belfast’s heritage waterfront and increases local use, pride and

wellbeing. These benefits are evidenced through the number of people visiting the charity’s assets as well as the number of participants engaged in programmed heritage and outdoor events. We record monthly visitor numbers and demographics (including school groups), and feedback from visitor satisfaction surveys. We also commission and publish independent evaluation reports on how our projects / assets are meeting our objectives. This purpose does not lead to harm. The charity’s beneficiaries are people that live in and visit Belfast and Northern Ireland, both present and future generations. The private benefits flowing from this purpose may include the appointment of an operator to manage Titanic Belfast and SS Nomadic. The operator can make a reasonable return however this is incidental and necessary as our charity is not a specialist attraction operator and would not take on the significant commercial risks of running a large-scale tourist attraction. The operator was publicly procured to ensure they offered the most advantageous terms to the charity, and they are managed via a robust operator agreement ensuring that our purposes are achieved. There are arguably other private benefits arising from our work e.g. increase in tourism in the area which benefits local hospitality providers and local shops, restaurants, attractions and other companies in the vicinity of the waterfront. We also deliver small scale public realm enhancements which may benefit landowners and developers. These private benefits are considered incidental and necessary to ensure delivery of charitable purpose.
