Public benefits
(i) What are the benefits that flow as a result of the purpose being carried out? Several benefits flow from our purposes. We help in the creations of social cohesion, allowing Whitehead and environs to develop together as a community, offering chances for people to meet and work together, developing skills sets and widening the circle of social
interaction and influence. We act as a hub of information. Whether on our website, facebook page or through face to face meetings in the office, we provide a vital conduit for information about Whitehead. That information is not restricted to news about Whitehead Community Association but includes voluntary groups, church organisations, council supported initiatives, ad hoc groups and individuals. We also include information about people’s rights, funding opportunities and news from further afield. We also publish regular news letters and leaflets and are currently producing a ‘business map’ of the town aimed for tourists for the new Gobbins Path attraction. As outlined in our supporting documents, we provide a literal and metaphorical non-political space open to all-comers. We also have maintained a drive for social inclusiveness having run diversity days, cultural exchange forums and taken part in such events as Holocaust Memorial Day. As allied aim to promoting diversity, we are also aware of our role in combatting social exclusion of the town with many of our classes we house and support there help groups like the elderly (Floral Art, tea dances and the like) and stay at home mums (Jo Jingles, various keep fit classes). While these tend towards providing social activities, many of them have an educative element. We also house a project run by Genesis Youth Exchange aimed at providing opportunities for socially disadvantaged group to learn about the new internet technologies. In maintaining the building, we afford educational, cultural and social opportunities for the people of the town. We provide opportunities for communal entertainment through the organisation and running of annual summer festivals, Victorian Street Fairs, Easter Road races and other more ‘ad hoc’ events. We encourage the development of local business in the area, both in terms of providing units for six local businesses and acting as a hub for town promotion. (ii) How are these benefits capable of being demonstrated? The benefits are capable of being demonstrated by the following: • The existence of a building for community activities • The maintenance and upkeep of the building • Service Level Agreement with Mid and East Antrim Council • Mid and Full year reports to Mid and East Antrim Council in regard to the above • End of year accounts • Agendas and minutes of WCA Committee Meetings • Agenda and minutes of WCA Annual General Meetings • Regular news letters • Upkeep of website • Upkeep of Facebook page • Regular social/community events throughout the year • A two-week summer festival • A one-day Victorian Street Fair • An annual Easter Road Race • Other ‘ad hoc’ events – either as main organiser or participant • Coverage in local papers • Various ‘ad hoc’ items of promotional material – posters, flyers, leaflets etc. • Liaising with formal bodies, voluntary associations and local government – eg facilitating meetings of Community Police Liaison Committees, various Mid and East Antrim community planning initiatives, fire safety information days, facility for Blood Transfusion Service. Much of our energy is putting into running, promoting and maintaining an independent community centre. The centre acts as a hub from businesses, local groups, voluntary groups and social activity groups (Addiction NI, Alzheimers Group) to run clinics, classes, get together, educational and cultural events. The centre also houses six small local
businesses. WCA also promotes events/fundraisers aimed at social cohesion: a summer festival, a Victorian Street Fair and Easter Road Race and other events as well.
