Public benefits

The purpose of the Ulster Medical Society is to improve the care of the sick and to promote and advance health and medical science by widening the education of medical students, doctors and allied health professionals, hence promoting better patient outcomes. The Society is supported by membership fees only and does not seek other sources of

income. Membership is open to medical students, qualified medical doctors and allied health professionals. The fees for each individual reflect the level of training, and membership fees vary from no fee to a full annual membership fee of £75.00. The Society achieves the stated purpose of improving health care by 1. Hosting a series of invited lectures throughout the academic year which reflect the health ‘theme’ as chosen by the sitting president. The lectures are held in hospital or Queen’s University premises, and access is ‘hybrid’, either in person or online from home. CPD certificates (Continuing Professional Development) are issued to attendees. 2. The Society promotes research by collaborating with Queen’s University and the N Ireland Medical & Dental Training Agency in delivering a trainee research day, at which the Society sponsor prizes for the best oral and poster presentation, thus recognising and rewarding research excellence. In addition, each formal lecture through the year has an initial opening session designated to allow trainees to present a synopsis of ongoing research. This programme promotes the dissemination of knowledge and inspires innovation. 3. The Society publishes three issues of the Ulster Medical Journal per year, available in printed or digital format. The ISO 4 standard abbreviation of the Journal is ‘Ulst. Med. J.’ The journal covers a spectrum of technologies/perspectives/categories related to medicine. All published articles are peer reviewed. The journal provides a portal for medical and other health care practitioners to publish local medical research. Ulster medical society provides free medical education to doctors and other health care professional working in Northern Ireland. This improved knowledge will benefit patients. At a time when health service budgets for education are being cut this provision of free medical education is a major benefit to everyone. These benefits can be demonstrated by the fact that the Ulster Medical society holds a programme of lectures about important medical topics which are well attended by both doctors and medical students who leave with improved medical knowledge. The Society is registered for continuing Professional Development and provides CPD certificates to those who attend the lectures. The UMS also publishes the Ulster medical Journal. This has a circulation of over 700. This journal provides a means for medical and other health care practitioners to publish medical research work. The journal has an increasing citation index and impact factor which is tangible evidence that many people are reading these articles and improving their medical knowledge which will benefit their patients. The purposes of our charity will not lead to any harm. The charity’s beneficiaries are anyone who seeks medical advice/care and who will benefit from seeing someone whose knowledge and expertise has been improved by attending meetings of the UMS or reading the Journal. This includes both adults and children. There are no private benefits flowing from the purpose.
