Public benefits

The benefits flowing from the purposes of Coyle’s Cottage Women’s Group are that local women from an isolated rural district have access to a centre where they can benefit from a wide range of activities. They benefit from having a meeting place where they can receive counselling and support with their everyday problems. They also benefit from

the various classes, lectures, exhibitions and events organised by the group aiming to improve the knowledge, skills, well-being and self-confidence of such women. They benefit from the experience of the Management Committee of the group who can refer them to relevant statutory or voluntary agencies on matters of health, social welfare or legal rights. Women in the area of benefit which is not well served by public transport are able to access all these activities close to home. The women also benefit by meeting others from a diverse range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. They benefit from the skills they gain through traditional craft activities such as quilting, crochet and knitting. Many charities also benefit from the range of knitwear produced by the group and then forwarded to those in need. Families benefit from the increased self-confidence gained by local women and all members of the group benefit from social interaction, decreased isolation, health awareness activities and most importantly having a base where they can meet, talk and share both their experiences and their problems. The benefits are measured by constant feedback from group members. The Committee is formed from local people who regularly communicate with local women as to their needs. The benefits are also measured by the number of people joining the group and the numbers wanting to get involved with all the activities of the group. Evaluations take place after each series of classes or at the end of one off lectures and talks. The Committee also prepare evaluations for any funder who requires such information. A report on all activities and the evaluations of them are normally discussed at the AGM. There is no harm flowing from any of the activities of Coyle’s Cottage Women’s Group.

What your organisation does

Coyle’s Cottage Women’s Group was founded in 1993 to provide a meeting place for women from the Lough Shore area of Coagh and its environs. They provide a meeting place but also a hub of social and recreational activities where women can come and talk about their daily lives and the issues that confront them. If anyone arrives with issues which

require professional input whether it be health, education, family or other legal affairs they will be signposted to the appropriate voluntary or statutory agency. They also provide classes in traditional crafts such as sewing, knitting and crochet and regularly knit clothing for a range of charities. They organise talks and lectures on a range of issues such as home accident prevention, energy efficiency and also organise regular visits and tours to places of interest throughout Ireland. The group meet weekly in an ancient mud cottage which they have recently re-thatched thus reserving it for future generations. They also fund-raise for other charities such as the Children’s Hospice. They network with other women’s organisations. They try to access funding for their work and communicate regularly with their client base.
