Public benefits

GSoTM meets two of the charitable purposes. The advancement of Education and of the arts and culture. Purpose 1 : To provide tuition in traditional music in a wide selection of instruments, 12, offering high quality tuition to pupils of all ages and ability and providing pupils the opportunity to play together in various group settings. The

direct benefits that flow from this purpose are that members of the public who have an interest in learning and playing traditional music are able to access high quality tuition at affordable prices in a structured manner and in a safe environment. GSotM has approx. 200 pupils per year ( the main beneficiaries are young people) who are able to develop musically, enhance and develop their skills, talent and creative ability in traditional music. Benefits are demonstrated through the high quality of music produced by pupils, success in Fleadh, Feis and Festival, feedback from participants and teachers and evidenced in pupils participation in a multitude of community events, i.e. concerts, traditional music gigs and sessions. Purpose 2 : To promote appreciation for and knowledge of traditional music for the benefit of the wider public. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include benefit to the members of GSoTM who take part in promoting the music, song and dance on a local and national scale with the self confidence ,joy and fun of doing so and to the members of the general public who benefit from observing or being part of the many opportunities pupils have to show off their excellent skills. Participants benefit from gaining knowledge and pride in their own musical heritage which many have become disconnected from in the recent past. GSoTM would be recognised as perhaps the most valuable community arts resource in Newtownabbey. There are no private benefit to trustees.

What your organisation does

GSoTM was set up 22 years ago with the specific aim of providing high quality tuition for anyone with an interest in learning and/or playing traditional Irish music in the Glengormley and North Belfast areas. It is a voluntary body which is well established in the local community and located in a local secondary school. 34 Classes are provided in

12 different instruments on a Thursday night. They are structured and the standard of teaching is constantly reviewed. An Arts Council Grant and high pupil numbers allow fees to be kept as low as possible with reduced rates for families and second instruments. We recognise the importance both socially and musically of allowing pupils the opportunity to play together in groups. Pupils take part in numerous community events and in gigs and sessions. Pupils have been very successful in competitions and in LSM exams which they are encouraged and supported to take part in. GSoTM runs a Trad Music Summer Scheme and a yearly trip to Donegal for workshops.
