Public benefits
The purposes of Belfast Canoe Club are to promote the sport and recreation of Canoeing, particularly competitive canoeing, and the involvement of young people in the sport. The public benefits of the Club activities are opportunities for members of the public to participate in the sport and recreation of Canoeing, particularly competitive
canoeing, and the involvement of young people in the sport. The benefits of this participation include improved skills, strength and conditioning, fitness, personal achievement and development and volunteering opportunities. These benefits can be demonstrated by achievement of recognised awards of British Canoeing, by participation in canoeing events in the United Kingdom and abroad, by improvements in fitness and skills of individuals demonstrated by performance of individuals including medal winning performances in competitions and progression through divisional systems towards elite level. These are recorded in our annual report, as well as in publicly available competition results, etc. The purposes of our charity may lead to the following harm: as with any sport there is a small risk of injury. This is minimised by use of experienced and qualified coaches and appropriate risk assessment and mitigation. We can show that this remaining risk is outweighed by the benefits of participation in sport through improved skills and fitness levels and the proven health benefits of regular exercise. The charity’s beneficiaries are those members of the public who choose to make use of the opportunities we offer to come canoeing with us, and those who join as members for longer term opportunities. The only private benefit flowing from the purpose is to those who supply the equipment we have to buy and any facilities we have to pay to use, and this is incidental and necessary because without equipment and facilities we could not offer our activities.

Our volunteer coaches run courses to introduce young people and adults to the sport of canoeing. We are currently the only club in the greater Belfast area offering coaching in the Olympic discipline of Canoe Racing. We supply specialised boats and paddles to allow people to experience the sport and compete without incurring major expenditure. We
offer regular training sessions for young people and adults to improve their skills and performance in the sport of canoeing with benefits to their personal development, health and fitness. We encourage people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities to participate in competitive canoeing with a view to personal achievement by improving performance, however the majority of our members who benefit from our programmes are young people in the age range 12-18. We aim to recruit from all sections of the community and encourage competitors to aspire to be selected for Northern Ireland, British and Irish international representative teams We run competitions in the various disciplines of canoeing which are open to anyone in Northern Ireland, and coordinate attendance by our members at events throughout Ireland and in Great Britain. We support other organisations organising activities on the water by providing safety cover. Canoeing is an adventurous activity and it is important that risks are managed by appropriate safety procedures, coaching and supervision, which we provide for all our club activities. Participation in club organised activities is significantly safer than canoeing as an individual.
