Public benefits
Derry Theatre Trust strives to ensure that the Millennium Forum provides public benefit. The Derry Theatre Trust provides an all in one leisure facility in the form of theatre, restaurant and bar facilities. The Trustees give careful consideration in setting admission prices to the Theatre, ensuring that the facility is for the public benefit and
accessible to everyone interested in the Arts, in that admission prices differ depending on the night of the performance, on seat location etc. Local amateur groups also benefit from reduced theatre hire rates. The Trustees believe that they are therefore meeting the public benefit test by increasing the accessibility of the Theatre to both patrons and local groups. These benefits can be evidenced by the increase, year on year, of audience numbers as ratified by Audiences NI, various public bodies and through data received from Millennium Forum audience questionnaires. The Theatre produces an annual Youth Musical with performers sourced from local schools and colleges. This is very beneficial in the education of young people in the Theatre and Arts - where it is artistically and financially viable, introducing new programming that stretches the audience, exposing them to new art forms and new challenging experiences that fully reflect the power of the arts to move society. This is in recognition of the need for ‘work of a dramatic nature’ that has a relevance to Northern Ireland/Ireland which would not otherwise be available, be prepared to play a part alongside other NI theatres in producing work that can be toured to the major theatres across the island, providing always that this is financially viable. The Theatre ensures that facilities and the cost of hiring those facilities are maintained to a standard and at a level that does not prohibit their use by local arts tutors and arts and community groups. There is no harm arising from any of our purposes. The charities beneficiaries are the general public, local drama, musical and dance groups and young people in the Theatre and Arts. Private Benefits flowing from the organisation’s purposes are enhancing the local economy from audiences visiting the Theatre and staying in the area. This results in increased business for hotels, bars, restaurants and taxi companies. We contract with local suppliers for purchase of food and bar stocks, brochure production and advertising thereby increased business for them. We also provide full, part time and casual employment, thereby increasing employment in the area. These private benefits are however necessary and incidental to achieving the purposes of Derry Theatre Trust.’
