Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from our purpose include improved life skills, social skills and empowerment for people with learning disabilities across the North West of Ireland. The effects of increased skills and empowerment is reflected across the whole of the person’s life including; reduction in stress and anxiety, more involvement with

community activities, less isolation, achievement of individual goals and an increase in self-confidence. These benefits are evidenced by attendance logs kept in Destined’s centres, independent evaluation reports and regular feedback from Destined members. The purposes of our charity are developmental so this sometimes means taking a calculated risk in order to support our members to independence and greater social inclusion. This risk is dealt with by using a person centred planning process where each member is assessed for their ability to progress at their own rate. The charity’s beneficiaries are people with learning disabilities across the North West of Ireland and also the wider community who will benefit from having increased participation and volunteering in community events from people with learning disabilities. The only private benefit from this purpose is that as a user led organisation most of the Trustees are also beneficiaries Members of the Board receive training on the roles and responsibilities of being a Board member and governance training so that they are capable of managing any problems that arise. These benefits are necessary and incidental to achieving the purposes of Destined Ltd.

What your organisation does

Destined is a support organisation for people with learning disabilities. Its mission statement is 'Access to Citizenship through Empowerment'. It has two distinct strands of activity, to give its members the skills and self-confidence to play a fuller part in the community and to support the community to be pro-active in the process of social

inclusion. The organisation operates a city centre drop-in that is open morning, afternoon and evenings and has programmes running at weekends. The group also has a similar facility in Feeny, Co. Derry that provides services in the rural area. Destined operates a person centred planning process to inform the type and content of programmes, but the group operates on the simple assumption that its members have the same rights as everyone else to participate in the community and the only difference is that they may need a bit of extra support to do so.
