a) advance education and promote the preservation of health of the people in the area of benefit by the provision of resources, training and grants with the object of improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants of the area of benefit; The direct benefits that flow from this purpose will be improved education access and opportunities for
people in identified poverty-affected rural areas of Kenya, better resourced schools and CPD training for teachers in these identified communities, leading to improved health and well-being in sustainable communities. The benefits will be demonstrated by more children and adults registered to attend school, through the employment of new approaches to teaching and learning in the classroom by teachers in identified communities of benefit and the provision of resources in schools tracked through purchase receipts and photographs in annual reports. There is no harm identified through this purpose. There are no private benefits from this purpose. b) relieve poverty and hunger in the area of benefit by any charitable means and in particular the provision of grants and training to enable poor people to establish and maintain projects which will enable them to relieve their own poverty; The benefits that flow from this purpose will be the creation and setting up of micro-businesses and community enterprises in identified poor communities in rural Kenya, leading to sustainable jobs and incomes in these communities ultimately contributing to the relief of poverty and hunger. The benefits will be demonstrated through the establishment of sustainable community enterprises, the creation and provision of jobs within the local communities of benefit and monitored through annual reports from the projects There is no harm identified through this purpose. There are no private benefits from this purpose. c) recruit, select and send out volunteers from the UK for service within the area of benefit and any other method the committee may from time to time decide; The benefits that flow from this purpose will be the voluntary sharing of skills and expertise with poor under-developed local rural communities in Kenya, building local capacity in these communities and subsequently raising awareness in local communities in Northern Ireland of the work of the organisation. These benefits will be demonstrated by the number of self-funded volunteers going to Kenya on behalf of the organisation, the raising of skills and expertise in communities of benefit through workshops and training sessions and an increase in awareness in Northern Ireland of the issues in Kenya that are addressed through the efforts of the organisation given through illustrated talks and web feedback. There is a recognised personal safety risk for volunteers who travel through this purpose to Kenya and similar developing countries. This risk is addressed through regular guidance updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, risk assessments, travel insurance and use of safe, secure accommodations and vehicles whilst in-country. There are no private benefits from this purpose. d) promote the conservation of the physical and natural environment in the area of benefit. The benefits that flow from this purpose will be a heightened awareness in local rural communities in Kenya of the value of their natural environment and the skills and knowledge to sustainably manage these eco-systems for the benefit of local people, wildlife and the economy. enefits will be demonstrated by increase in sustainably managed projects that co-exist with, and enhance, the local natural environment and the successful long-term conservation of wildlife species in areas of benefit. Evidence will come through annual project reports and published research reports into species conservation by the Kenya Wildlife Service (Government) and internationally recognised conservation organisations. Gift International is a ‘Grassroots Initiatives Funding and Training’ provider for poor rural communities mainly in Kenya, but also in similar developing countries. By fundraising through for example: events, coffee mornings, donations, illustrated talks and lectures, Gift International raises funds in NI for use in the areas of benefit for the
funded provision of teacher training workshops, bursaries for student education, health and nutrition initiatives, building of schools, resourcing of classrooms and students, capacity-building training workshops for local community representatives and the provision of small start-up funds for sustainable enterprises in identified communities. Local enterprises range from tree nurseries, bee-keeping projects, maize mill construction and equipment, poultry projects, dressmaking and tailoring courses and sewing machine provision. Health benefits come from examples such as: adult education, provision of mosquito nets, sustainable provision of milk through dairy cow projects and training in basic hygiene and access to emergency medical aid through provision of mobile phones for rapid communication in remote areas. Education benefits come from for example: school construction and equipment, teacher training, school fees funds, tertiary student bursaries, adult training course provision and knowledge and skills shared by volunteers in the areas of benefit.
