Public benefits

The purposes of Bangor Historical Society are: a) The study of and the encouragement of public interest in history, folklore, archaeology and antiquities with special reference to the local area. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include the study of and the maintenance of public interest in local history particular in the North Down

and Ards area and providing members with a wider historical perspective. These benefits can be demonstrated by appreciative feedback from members about their participation in the Society’s activities. Many have developed their own research into local and family history as a result of being encouraged by information received through the Society. There is also anecdotal evidence of members becoming stimulated through the Society to study and research wider historical subjects. In Bangor alone, when public events are held on historical subjects, especially local history, members of Bangor Historical Society are usually noticeable among the audiences providing a core of public interest in history. The Society has also been consulted by local government on issues of local history thus providing a benefit to the community and helping to preserve a knowledge of our historical heritage. Through its involvement in the publication of various booklets etc. relating to local history including the publication of old photographs of Bangor etc. the Society has helped to preserve local heritage – a very evident benefit to the community both now and for the future. b) The holding of lectures, visits and outings and the encouragement of the study of local history The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include promoting lifelong learning for its mainly elderly membership. The Society’s engagement of high quality lecturers encourages them and some Society members in historical research which keeps our heritage alive. Visits and outings benefit the members whose mental health is improved by the companionship enjoyed in these group outings. The historical venues visited by the Society benefit from the fees received which contribute to the preservation of these pieces of heritage. Benefits also accrue to the coach companies who convey the Society’s groups. Hotels, cafes and other bodies providing refreshment en route to the Society benefit directly as must the wider community from the income generated by these outings. The local authority renting premises to the Society clearly benefits financially as does its insurers. These benefits can be demonstrated by the existence of a growing body of lecturers on history providing high quality talks backed by research. Members always give positive oral feedback to the Society’s Committee about their experiences and frequently introduce younger family members to the lectures as visitors. The Society is always welcomed at the venues visited and lecturers are usually eager to return. Local government respects Bangor Historical Society and regards it as an asset to the community. The purposes of our charity will not lead to any harm. The charity’s beneficiaries are its members drawn mainly from the North Down & Ards area and also the wider community which benefits from its activities both financially and because its existence and activities encourage respect for preserving local heritage. The only private benefit flowing from the purpose is the financial gain to the local authority renting premises for lectures, also to lecturers receiving fees, proprietors of historical venues charging for visits/tours by the Society, coach operators transporting members and organisations providing refreshments on these journeys. Insurers also benefit from the Society. This is incidental and necessary because without these services the Society could not function. All costs are covered by members either by their membership subscriptions - for lectures and administration - or through charges to cover the actual expense of outings.

What your organisation does

The Society meets monthly from September to April and pays speakers for lectures on history, folklore, archaeology and antiquities often with a special reference to the local area of Bangor. Each talk is reported in The North Down Spectator. Two or three visits are organised each year to places of historical interest and attract about thirty

members each time. Over the years it has published journals, postcards from the past, photographic calendars of " Old Bangor " and contributed to booklets on the same theme.
