Public benefits

The public benefit which flows from CCAT’S community development role is that local organisations are able to work better together to provide a range of facilities and services to the inhabitants of Cloughmills and the surrounding district, all of which helps to promote good community relations. This is done through partnership working on village

renewal, joint funding of training to support community organisations in the delivery of services and partnership projects to explore local history and traditions. It has a presence on the web and on facebook and it publishes a community newsletter to keep people informed. Flowerbeds, hanging baskets, grassed areas and hedges around the village are maintained to ensure that local inhabitants can take pride in the appearance of their community. CCAT also provides direct public benefit to local inhabitants in a number of ways. It has created a community allotment garden and biopark at the Old Mill , Cloughmills where it has developed a range of activities involving the growing of food (fruit and veg) , the cooking of food and training local people in those activities-the“Incredible Edible Cloughmills”project. This is the centre piece of a community food initiative which helps local inhabitants to gain new skills which contribute to better health, a better quality of life and helps to prevents social isolation. The garden and biopark provide an ideal setting in which people can learn about nature and environmental conservation. CCAT runs courses and activities for those purposes, especially for young people. It has also developed courses on social and therapeutic horticulture for people with mental health conditions and provides open access to the biopark grounds for general recreational needs. Training courses for various craft based activities are provided at the garden and at other venues which help local people to develop new skills (in jam making , beer making, baking, christmas decorations, candle making, felting and patchwork quilting).) and it provides courses for digital inclusion which are helpful for older people in the community to cope with online services. CCAT manages the delivery of community events throughout the year (at Easter, Halloween and Christmas) and produces a summer Country Fair - all of these are key events in the local calendar for the development of good community relations.

What your organisation does

CCAT is a community development organisation providing services to the community in Cloughmills and the surrounding district. Volunteers from CCAT maintain flower beds, hanging baskets, grassed areas and hedges throughout the public areas of the village. CCAT has developed a large community garden and 4 acre biopark at the once derelict site of

an old flax mill at the centre of the village and turned this area into a community space for holding community events throughout the year. The allotment garden is the resource for the development of ‘Incredible Edible Cloughmills’ project which teaches people how to’ grow your own’ and show how to cook wholesome and healthy food. This is part of an overall community food initiative designed to get people actively involved to improve wellbeing in the community. The garden and biopark provides a resource to develop a range of courses and workshops on social and therapeutic horticulture, which can improve mental health , conservation study courses for young people and outdoor recreation for all through open access to the riverside walkways and paths through the grounds. The mill buildings have been refurbished to provide a men's shed, a community fridge, a library of things (to borrow), meeting rooms and a demonstration kitchen. The organisation arranges training classes on practical subject such as first aid, food hygiene , cookery , craft activities and also organises classes to enable older people to develop confidence in using online services.
