Public benefits
(a) The public benefit to flow from the funding of research at Belfast City Hospital and Queens University Belfast relating to kidney and associated diseases is to increase the knowledge and skills base available to surgeons, nephrologists and GPs in their treatment of all forms of kidney illness. The benefits are evidenced by improvements
in:- 1) A better understanding of diabetic kidney disease 2) Increased knowledge of the factors leading to long term success of transplantation 3) Increased knowledge into the risks of heart disease following transplantation 4) Better ways of managing chronic kidney disease in the community Annual updates on current research projects are available on our web site www.kidneyresearchni.com. The results of this research is published world wide with papers being presented for example to the American Society of Nephrology; the British Transplant Society and the European Diabetic Nephrology Society. (b) The public benefit that flows from the provision of advanced state of the art equipment is that researchers have access to laboratory facilities, tools and equipment not normally available through the NHS. This equipment will speed the analysis of data which will lead to shortened validation times of the research. Advanced diagnostic equipment assists nephrologists to determine best early treatment of patients at the onset of kidney illness. (c) Public awareness and actively promoting the Organ Donor Register is addressed by our information leaflet which is distributed widely throughout Northern Ireland and contact details on our web site. We publically promote organ donation at major retail outlet centres; schools; universities and at seminars to encourage the public to sign the Organ Donor Register.
