Public benefits

People in the townland of Drumalane and its environs receive many benefits through the work of the Drumalane / Quayside Close Community Association, these include: Better life opportunities; opportunities to advance or continue education; opportunities to engage in more active lifestyles through the provision of health related programmes and

activities leading to improvements in both physical and mental well-being; opportunities for stronger bonds to develop between people and prevent or reduce social isolation; opportunities for community to come together to participate and contribute to a vibrant community life and enhanced community spirit; opportunities for people to increase skills base / capacity; developing people’s confidence and self-esteem; building community knowledge. These benefits will be demonstrated by; quarterly Activity Reports submitted to Council and DSD; returns to funders / End of Grant Reports; Annual Reports; achievements / milestones reached by people in the community; a combination of the above may also bring improvements in people’s employability, physical & mental health/well-being; and may raise individual aspirations as well as reducing anti-social behaviour, improving community safety and creating less dependence on the State. This Purpose does not give rise to any harm. The benefit is intended primarily for the people living in the townland of Drumalane and its environs which is a designated Neighbourhood Renewal Area with high levels of multiple deprivation. There is no private benefit intended, however, some private benefit may arise to trustees because they may get to learn about various ‘opportunities’ before the rest of the community and may get access to good governance training and gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are all incidental and necessary. Purpose 2 To establish or to secure the establishment of a community facility … Drumalane / Quayside Close Community Association remain proactively committed to securing the funding to allow for the development of a new community facility; in partnership with Newry, Mourne & Down District Council we have an application pending with the Department for Social Development – should capital funding become available our project has been identified as the number one priority on the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership’s Action Plan. With a purpose built community building the Community Association could facilitate a range of services, activities (social & leisure) and opportunities and there would be many direct benefits to the community, these would include the following; provision of After School/Homework Club; Parent & Toddler Group; Summer Schemes & Seasonal Events; access to computers / the internet and provision of training courses in the heart of the community; provision of an affordable place for people to meet and to find out what’s going on in the community; it would also bring together diverse groups including different ethnicities and age groups. In the absence of a community facility for the area we currently have access to a venue one evening per week (Orchard Centre which is owned / managed by the Southern Health & Social Care Trust) and the direct benefits which flow from this include the following; Arts & Crafts activities for children & young people; a range of health related activities such as Zumba & Ballroom/Jive dance classes and keep fit classes. These benefits will be demonstrated through: registration and consent forms for each course or activity and regular consultation and feedback with/from the community. This Purpose does not give rise to any harm. The benefit is intended primarily for the people living in the townland of Drumalane and its environs which is a designated Neighbourhood Renewal Area with high levels of multiple deprivation. There is no private benefit intended.
