Public benefits

Glenarm Village Committee provides direct benefit to the residents of Glenarm and its environs through the provision of education programmes that have provided our young people in particular with additional skills that have aided them in attaining meaningful employment - for example food hygiene, first aid and computer courses have all been

delivered locally through the work of village committee. The committee's work with the Prince's Trust for the built Environment and local council has resulted in the Glenarm Regeneration Project and we have were engaged in the organisation of village consultation events and early planning applications that have produced a blue-print for the development and regeneration of former industrial units and land at the entrance to Glenarm village on the seafront/harbour area. An event is being hosted by the village committee and local council in July to mark the re-launch of the project under the support of the newly formed Mid and East Antrim Council. This will provide direct benefit to the village through the development of a disused area of the village that is in a poor state both visually and in safety terms. The protection of the natural and built heritage is a key purpose of our committee and during the planning process sought to ensure the regeneration project maintained our heritage as a key port and one of the first towns in Ulster. Residents will directly benefit through the enhancement of the area and improved safety, and importantly in the provision of community space for residents and visitors to gather. The activities of 'Glenarm in Bloom' are supported through committee structures and they provide a benefit to both residents and a wider benefit through the maintenance and production of the beautiful array of flowers and plants that adorn the village. Winners of Gold medals in Ulster and Britain in Bloom Competitions and 'Best Village Awards' are evidence of the hard work of a small group of residents who also encourage others to get involved in maintaining their village. The youth in particular have helped with village and beach 'clean-ups' providing them with a benefit in terms of learning the importance of community working together. Our youth have also been involved in the production of Artwork - namely a large mosaic of the village situated on the outer wall of the toilet facility at the sea front car park - again they have directly benefited through their involvement and the wider community have a fantastic pictorial presentation of our village. The committee led in the production of historical signage in the village that supports our long heritage as one of the first towns in Ulster and benefits residents in maintaining our proud position and the wider community, tourists in particular, who have clear signage and pictorial representations to guide them through our village. The village committee produces a regular newsletter that benefits the residents of the village in terms of marinating community links. Our residents get to read about local newsworthy issues and hear about forthcoming village social events. For elderly residents in particular this provides a welcome opportunity to maintain awareness of village events and news. The committee organises ad hoc social events throughout the year to support a sense of community that benefits all in the village. The Christmas Fare in particular giving residents an opportunity to meet social during the winter months.

What your organisation does

The committee meets on a monthly basis and brings together representatives from a number of village groups (Glenarm in Bloom, Glenarm Buildings Preservation Trust, local churches, businesses - Glenarm Castle etc) together with local councillors and the voluntary sector. Local councillors are provided with a forum in which to discuss council

priorities and more importantly, the village in given the opportunity of engaging with local council on matters of priority. We are engaged with local planning issues and provide the community with a forum in which to air their views with local statutory agencies A subgroup of the committee currently works in partnership with the Prince's Trust and Mid and East Antrim Council on the Glenarm Regeneration Project. This project has the consent of the community having been given the opportunity to become engaged at the outset through committee led consultation events. The Glenarm in Bloom Group are busy all year in the planning and planting/maintenance of flower beds throughout the village that have seen the village awarded 'Best Village' and Gold Medals in Ulster and Britain in Bloom competitions. The committee produces a regular newsletter giving residents a forum to highlight newsworthy items or events taking place providing our elderly residents with a means of keeping up to date with village life. A recent 'call for action' in the newsletter highlighted the need for more volunteers to support the Glenarm in Bloom work.
