Public benefits

The promotion ,retention and restoration of buildings identified as being of historical importance to the local community and the greater Belfast area. Providing educational opportunities . Providing social interaction and activities for the local community. We are a non-political non sectarian local history society open to everyone with an

interest in history regardless of colour or creed. These benefits can be demonstrated by feedback and words of thanks from the beneficiaries for the information received. The purposes of our charity will not lead to any harm. The charity's beneficiaries are the general public in the West Belfast area, those who originated in the area but have since moved away, and those who ancestors originated in the area and are keen to learn about the lives of their ancestry. There are no private benefits.

What your organisation does

We provide a monthly lecture programme on a historical aspect of Belfast and surrounding area and a wide variety of other historical topics .We have contacts with local secondary schools whose pupils ,with their teachers, attend talks relevant to the GCSE history exam curriculum. Through our membership of the Federation for Ulster Local Studies

and Federation of Local History Societies (Republic of Ireland history Federation)we have contact with historical societies throughout Ireland .Our members have taken part in history based holidays to the U.K. and made contacts with societies in York ,Bristol ,Bath, Glasgow and Devon and Cornwall. We attend lectures ,seminars and outings with Northern Ireland historical societies organised by the Ulster Federation .Our chairman gives talks on local history matters in schools libraries and community centres. We work with the three other Belfast Historical Societies and the Belfast Civic Trust in order to support the preservation of old buildings of historical interest.

The object and purpose of the Society is to promote a knowledge and understanding of the past by means of education, recording and dissemination of information especially in the West Belfast area.
