What benefits flow from this purpose The benefits which flow from the purpose is focused on the active participation in performing arts activities by local communities and communities of interest. This is achieved by the company running theatre workshops with local communities and communities of interest to develop the performance skills of

individuals and to use the performing arts activities to examine the issues that each community may want to explore. The company engages in running training workshops and courses for artists, community leaders and community workers who want to work in the area of drama and theatre facilitation and to engage local communities and communities of interest in harnessing the power of drama and theatre to promote artistic and creative activity, through performance, writing and production and all aspects of presenting theatrical work. In addition to providing training on how to use these methodologies to explore and express issues of importance to local communities and communities of interest. In addition to individuals directly and actively participating in performing arts the company brings theatrical performances to local communities and communities of interest to encourage appreciation of the arts and by working with local communities to present performances that reflect their experiences. Many of the performances presented are followed by a post show discussion with the cast and writer and director to examine and deconstruct the performance both from a creative perspective and also from the content of the performance. The company presents professional performances theatre venues across Northern Ireland in addition to presenting performances in school and local communities and non traditional performances spaces. The company develops radio plays and television documentaries on the performances and also on the processes developed to provide greater access to a broader community allowing people to benefit from the performance through various medium. Can you demonstrate this As part of every creative and artistic activity provided by the company the participants and audience are always given an opportunity to provide feedback on the experience this is done either through a written questionnaire or through the post show discussion following the performance. The aim of these evaluations are to measure the impact of the workshops, training and performances and to continue to modify the delivery of the work to allow for the maximum impact. In addition to the gaining of theatre skills in performance, writing, directing and all aspects of the presenting a performance the participants highlight the fact that they have gained in confidence, and reading and writing skills are also developed through the use of scripts etc. They also express gaining a deeper understanding of the theatre and its forms and how it can be used by the public to communicate their needs. Also that theatre is owned by the people and this is a method they can use within their own communities to express their needs, desires, histories and experiences. Is any harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit There is no harm to participating in any of the activities presented by Smashing Times Theatre Company. Who is the benefit for? The work is presented to the public in general when we present public performances all members of the community are open to attend and participant as audience members and workshop participants. From time to time with particular projects we target communities experiencing disadvantage both social and economic. We also depending on the project activities can target youth in secondary schools. But in general the work of the company is open for all to participant in. Is There a Private Benefit There is no private benefit for the activities of the company.

The company uses the methodology of drama and theatre to promote advancement in education for communities experiencing social and economic disadvantage. Through a number of projects. 1, Acting for Peace which promotes the advancement of Peace and Reconciliation through interactive educational theatre projects which promote anti racism, anti

sectarianism, human rights and equality. 2 Acting for the Future and Move for Life, which uses interactive process of drama and theatre to promote the advancement of positive mental and physical health and suicide prevention among disadvantaged communities in Northern Ireland

Charitable purposes

The Company is established to advance education, to promote the arts and to promote the benefit of the people of Northern Ireland (the “area of benefit”) without distinction of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnic identity, political or religious opinion, and in particular to: a) encourage appreciation for and active participation in performing arts activities; b) to encourage appreciation of the arts and stimulate the artistic creativity of people in the area of benefit by the provision of artistic performances, workshops, training, support and facilities for artistic expression to include the writing and production of contemporary plays of historical and cultural merit to the area of benefit. c) to present, promote, organise, manage and produce performances, workshops, and exhibitions of works of cultural and educational value, including performances, dramas, comedies, broadcasts, television shows, entertainments and exhibitions.
