Public benefits

Promotion of wellbeing and the acquiring of life skills through creativity, art making and educational presentations or talks. In order to promote the use of creativity in the arts to enhance wellbeing, NIGAT holds various talks, distributes leaflets, and promotes the use of art as therapy in the media. It raises public awareness by increasing

visibility of the organisation and holding experiential arts and wellbeing events. In relation to NIGAT's Public Benefits Statement, its beneficiaries include: individuals and community groups; members and non-members of the organisation alike; professionals working in a variety of fields related to mental health and the arts including art therapists, therapists, counsellors, artists, teachers, nurses, doctors, social workers, psychiatrists, probation officers, workers in statutory and voluntary agencies, prospective art therapy students; individuals receiving those professional services; and all those interested in the therapeutic application of the arts. NIGAT's membership is open to the general public (aged 18 +) and its educational and experiential events can be attended by members and non-members of the organisation. Therefor, NIGAT benefits the general public as well as professional groups by providing opportunities for adult training and continued professional development and serving as a professional network but is also open to any member of the general public who has an interest in art, creativity, and wellbeing. b) How are the direct benefits demonstrated ? NIGAT's purpose is to promote wholeness and wellbeing for individuals and community groups through creativity, creative activities and the use of art materials (The advancement of art) and to assist others who are promoting the aforementioned objectives (The advancement of education). The direct benefits that may be received by beneficiaries through NIGAT's purposes (The advancement of education and The advancement of arts) are demonstrated in the following ways as they relate to each purpose: The direct benefits are demonstrated in The advancement of education through: -enhanced knowledge and understanding in the therapeutic application of the arts -enhanced knowledge of creative arts techniques and methods -increased knowledge of current work, studies, and research being carried out in fields related to art, creativity, mental health, and the therapeutic use of the arts -development of artistic skills and techniques -increased knowledge of art and art history -increased knowledge of local artists, art galleries, and arts events -personal and professional development The direct benefits are demonstrated in The advancement of arts through: -promoting creativity, creative activities and the arts -promoting education in the arts and the therapeutic use of arts -promoting current work and developments in the therapeutic use of the arts -building relationships between the arts and other professions -attending events or workshops where the above are being promoted -the sense of wholeness and wellbeing from engaging in creative activities and art making -a sense of inspiration from appreciating the art work shared by others -increased appreciation for the arts and the therapeutic use of the arts -increased personal or professional use of the arts -personal experience of therapeutic benefits using the arts -promoting art exhibitions -participating in art exhibitions or arts based workshops -increased awareness of and engagement with local artists, art galleries, and arts events -increased appreciation for the arts

What your organisation does

1.Day meetings (experiential and educational event) 2.Summer School promoting creativity, arts and wellbeing (experiential and educational) 3.Website acts as an information nexus for those interested in the arts and wellbeing. We are often the first port of call for those looking for information regarding training as an arts therapist or for

knowledge of any event. The website and correspondence is maintained voluntarily by the committee members. 4.Engage with the NI Assembly, and have applied for the Assembly Connect fellowship, inviting local MLAs to attend Day Meetings and further promote the use of art as therapy 5.Regularly open our Reading Room, which serves as a meeting space, and art as therapy library, resource, and research space, as well as a centre in which various creative and arts/therapy related events are and can be held. 6.Hold annual art exhibition which showcases the work of members and individuals who have participated in NIGAT’s Summer School, further promoting wellbeing and the arts, raising awareness of the positive impact of creativity and the arts, and the use of art as therapy. 7.Partner with professional art therapy organisations, such as BAAT (The British Association of Art Therapists) to host workshops and other arts therapy-related events.
