Public benefits

The trustees believe that the purpose of the charity satisfies both elements of the public benefit requirements. The direct benefit that flows from the purpose of the charity includes improving the quality of life for any disabled or disadvantaged young person in Northern Ireland and as a consequence relieving stress on their families. It also

relieves the stress of the general public where they see a young disabled or disadvantaged person has been helped and to know that there is a source of aid available. The purpose does not give rise to any harm. The beneficiaries are the general public in Northern Ireland. No private benefit flows from the purpose other than in the case where the charity uses a supplier of building or alteration services for the benefit of a young person but this would be incidental and a necessary part of carrying out the purpose and is always on a competitive quote basis.

What your organisation does

The Karen Mortlock Trust is a non-profit making trust which makes grants or provides financial assistance to or for the benefit of disabled or disadvantaged young people in need throughout Northern Ireland so that an improved quality of life ensues. This has taken the form of assisting with installation of wheelchair access, providing specialist IT

equipment, supporting children suffering from cancer and supporting suicide awareness campaigns e.g. FASA. The charity’s income derives from investment income and in the past it has made significant donations to cancer charities e.g. N I Cancer Fund for Children. Referrals often come from this connection and each and every request for assistance is fully reviewed by the trustees to ensure it meets the charity’s purpose.
