Public benefits

Tobin Youth Centre located in Moortown in the Ardboe ward which is recognised as one of the most deprived wards in Northern Ireland. It ranked 75th in overall deprivation but it is 27 in terms of access to services. To that end the charity secured funding to build a purpose made Youth Centre which includes a hall, four meeting rooms and a

kitchen. The benefits to the young people are obvious with a strong youth club of over 220 members attending regularly. They benefit from all of the activities laid on such as the gymnastics, dance, art, rugby, soccer, handball, crafts and many many more. The parents benefit from the fact that their children can access these activities close to their own home without the need to transport them to other youth centres many miles away. The community benefits by having a facility for holding community events, birthday parties, Halloween and Christmas activities and people of all ages benefit from the other classes which are organised by the charity. These include ballroom dancing, yoga, arts and crafts and a weekly bingo session for the elderly. The benefits can be seen in the beneficiaries personal and social development, the development of their physical health and well being and the impact on their mental health as they now have a centre to meet, make friends, make old friends, socialise or participate in the wide programme of activities. Other organisations also benefit because they now have a venue to hold meetings, to practice or to perform. Such groups would be the local CCE, the dancing class, the music group etc. These benefits are measured in many ways. The Youth Club evaluates all of its activities and invites the young people to comment on what is on offer and make suggestions as to what they would like to see being offered. The charity also hold regular meetings with community activists to evaluate the activities being offered in the Centre and to assess the benefits of them. Numbers attending the various adult classes are a quick way to measure these benefits and most of these classes are evaluated at the end of a 6 week session. We also have more formal evaluations from our members for each piece of funding we try to attract. There is no harm flowing from any of the activities and there is no private benefit.

What your organisation does

Tobin Centre (Moortown) Ltd is a community focal point built to develop a variety of activities for the local community. It provides physical activities, recreational activities, educational courses and classes and leisure activities. Its main function is to ensure that the young people of the area of benefit have an attractive programme of

youth activities in their own centre therefore avoiding the need to travel many miles to other youth clubs in an area poorly served by public transport. It also offers activities for parents of both an educational and recreational nature. It offers basic skills courses, creative writing courses, art and crafts, circuit training, ballroom dancing, yoga, and has a weekly bingo session for the benefit of the less active more elderly population. The centre is used regularly for birthday parties and for one off community events at set times such as Christmas and Halloween. The centre sets out to develop the personal social and life skills of the community encouraging improved physical health and well being, alert to the dangers of mental health in a rural and socially isolated community.
