Public benefits

The advancement of Education, in particular, to promote the understanding of conflict in the community. The Trustees believe that our purpose satisfies both elements of the public benefit requirement. The direct benefits, which flow from this purpose, include: the development of a greater understanding of, and a new openness to, people from

diverse, and sometimes previously conflicting, identities; increased personal skill and confidence in citizens dealing positively with conflict; an increased capacity of community organisations to address community conflict constructively; an increase in the number of reconciliation projects and organisations being formed; and reduced levels of fear in the community. These benefits are, and will be, evidenced through: feedback from individuals and existing groups; the establishment of new groups and organisations committed to improve community understanding arising from our work; community survey evidence; the uptake and use of published resources that assist an understanding of conflict in the community by individuals and groups making use of the charity; individuals gaining independently accredited qualifications through our courses; and evaluations of our work. There is the potential for people interested in maintaining separation to challenge the work of the voluntary staff. Such challenges are necessary risks in achieving the purpose of the Trust and are regularly reviewed by the Trustees. The beneficiaries of this purpose are the general public, especially those wishing to understand conflict, as individuals and as members of civil society groups and organisations. Two private benefits flowing from this purpose are: that the unpaid work of staff may enhance their curriculum vitae in their professional work; and that the experience gained by Trustees may give insights transferable to their businesses. These experiences are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries and Trustees have a duty to govern the Charity competently.
