Public benefits
To relieve poverty, sickness and the aged and to promote the benefit of the inhabitants of the Millburn Estate and district area of Co Londonderry and it’s environs (hereinafter described as “the area of benefit”) without distinction of age, sex, race, political, religious or other opinion The direct benefits from this purpose include better
information for local people and reduced isolation in the area due to the activities put on for older people such as over 50’s clubs. The Association produce a newsletter to inform residents of activities that they may avail of. This purpose does not give rise to any harm. by associating the statutory authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance education The direct benefits from this purpose are residents are availing of opportunities to gain skills, experience by taking part in various classes. Local residents attend courses ie computer classes, essential skills, craft classes. Such courses have helped local people to become more familiar with IT and overcoming fears of computers. We have engaged with the primary school to run initiatives such as health fairs, leadership courses for young people. This helped to break down barriers between some within the community and the education system. This purpose does not give rise to any harm. and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare, for recreation or other leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants The direct benefits from this purpose are that local residents are more confident to engage in community activities. The community office is a hub of the community whereby local people will call in for advice. This has reduced anxiety among older people particularly, as they know all of the staff and volunteers in MCA. The over 50’s t dances provide opportunities for older residents to socialise. The youth activities provided by MCA also help to reduce anti social behaviour in the area. The provision of youth programmes gives these young people a positive focus. Many of these young people now volunteer in the community. We have gained many physical benefits to our area through engagement with local agencies and funders such as an upgraded community centre, MUGA pitch, new bus shelter. Such improvements benefit the local residents of our estate. Private benefits to trustees may arise from trustees developing skills and experiences through organising and attending classes or community events which may be useful other settings. This benefit is incidental and necessary in the delivery of the benefits. To establish or to secure the establishment of a Community Centre (hereinafter called the ‘Centre') and to maintain it and to manage to co-operate with any local statutory authority in the maintenance and management of such a Centre for activities promoted by the Association and its constituent bodies in furtherance of the above objects. The direct benefits from this purpose are an accessible venue within the local community, the utilisation of a building in the area and the availability of the Centre for use by local residents. The community based (leased from NIHE at a peppercorn rent) is a hive of activity and accommodates youth activities, over 50’s activities, a community suite as well as a community office. There is also a council owned community centre in the estate which also provides a wide range of activities from a playgroup, fitness classes, judo, etc. The purpose does not give rise to any harm. The beneficiaries are those living within the area of benefit. A private benefit to trustees may arise from the trustee developing skills and experiences through acting as key holder for the Centre which may be useful other settings. We demonstrate these benefits by evaluations, feedback and increase of numbers of beneficiaries attending events and activities.
