Public benefits
• Opportunities to advance or continue education – through the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership and Education sub-group the Community Association is able to facilitate training courses and training opportunities to benefit the community. Addressing educational and training needs can improve people’s employability by developing much sought
after skills. The Community Association can ensure that these opportunities are brought to the heart of the community by facilitating access to the Family Learning Centre at St Malachy’s Primary School and thus removing many barriers to entry. Community participation in any or all of the above will have many additional benefits such as; better life opportunities, opportunities for people to increase their skills base / capacity, developing people’s confidence and self-esteem to try something new. • Opportunities to engage in more active lifestyles through the provision of health related programmes and activities leading to improvements in both physical and mental well-being. Through the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership and Health sub-group the Community Association is able to secure a range of different activities / courses for the people in the area; these have included, Zumba dance classes, Tai Chi, Gymnastics (for children), Smoking Cessation Clinics and the Action Cancer Big Bus which has visited the area on a couple of occasions. • The above also provide opportunities for the community to come together to participate and contribute to a vibrant community life and enhanced community spirit. The Community Association provides opportunities for people to connect who would be unlikely to have met in any other walk of life and translates into a greater range of skills and perspective that can be drawn upon. • Through Community Newsletters/Bulletins which are regularly circulated throughout the area the Community Association is able to ensure that people living in the area are able to get access to the right information at the right time. This is essential for anyone who is feeling socially isolated or socially excluded and can go some way to combating these feelings. • In partnership with Community Restorative Justice NI the Community Association will continue to address ongoing neighbourhood conflict between the settled and Traveller communities and low level anti-social behaviour issues in the area; this will, hopefully, result in a more harmonious community environment which will be of benefit to everyone living in the area. These benefits will be demonstrated by; • Evaluation & registration forms for training courses and activities. • Neighbourhood Renewal Quarterly Activity Reports submitted to both Council and DSD. • Annual Reports presented at AGM. • End of Grant Reports to funders. • Achievements / milestones reached by people in the community • A combination of the above may also bring about improvements in people’s employability, physical and mental health/well-being; they may also raise individual aspirations as well as reducing anti-social behaviour, improving community safety and creating less dependence on the State. This purpose does not give rise to any harm. The benefit is intended primarily for the people living in the Martin’s Lane Area of Newry City which is a designated Neighbourhood Renewal Area with high levels of multiple deprivation. There is no private benefit intended, however, some private benefit may arise to trustees because they may get to learn about various ‘opportunities’ before the rest of the community and may get access to good governance training and gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are all incidental and necessary.
