Purpose 1: Relieve poverty, sickness and distress, to advance education in Omagh and surrounding district (hereinafter called the “area of benefit”) and in particular to provide support, information and practical help to people suffering from cancer and to their families and friends. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include:
increased physical wellbeing through access to complementary therapies which reduces tension and induces deep relaxation and reverses the effects of stress; increases circulation, aids the nervous system and revitalises energy. Other activities promote a positive mental attitude and a holistic approach enhances mental health; clients report general improved health outcomes. Provision of transport relieves the stress for families travelling to appointments; befriending benefits both the carers who can then attend to other things in their lives and the patient who has someone else to confide in that is not a family member. All our services provide a confidential space for our clients. These benefits will be evidenced by: word of mouth feedback; clients go on to become volunteers with the organisation; level of support from local community both in terms of actual fundraising and attendance at events; repeated support from large retail organisation; evaluation forms for some training programmes; growing recognition among the public about our work; and an enhanced reputation - the public appreciate that we are a local charity for local people We do not anticipate any harm leading from the purposes of our charity. During our initial assessment process we ask the clients consent to us engaging with their GP/health professionals to ensure our treatment will not negatively impact their health. All volunteers go through an Access NI check and we keep a copy of our drivers’ licences. The charity’s beneficiaries are people within a 25 mile radius of Omagh. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is than a trustee will gain skills and knowledge through our education programme and access to the services provided by the Centre. Through this trustees gain skills which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

Care for Cancer operates a drop in centre on a voluntary basis to support cancer patients, family members and carers who can come in and avail of a listening ear and refreshments. Our service is available to those within a 25 mile radius of Omagh. We offer a range of services such as transport to hospital appointments anywhere in Northern
Ireland, collection from home to hospital and the return journey. This might be for a consultant’s appointment, treatment or surgery. This is carried out by our volunteer car drivers. In the Centre we have complementary therapies with three qualified therapists, specialising in treatment of cancer patients - aromatherapy, reflexology and reiki - who support both the patient and carers. We have a counselling service with a qualified counsellor and a bra fitting service with a trained volunteer; these are confidential and take place by appointment only. We also offer support groups to cancer patients and their families and the bereaved and we can provide recliner chairs for the terminally ill as well as a befriending service to relieve family members from caring responsibilities to enable them to have some “me time.” We have an information library for people to borrow a range of information and well being books; a range of classes and courses such as lifestyle, well being to relaxation and creative courses. We have social activities such as our two outings a year which are open to clients, their families and volunteers and coffee mornings - open to clients, their families, volunteers and the public.
