Public benefits
The public purpose of Southern Group Enterprises Limited is to provide an educational programme, based on occupational and essential skills, to those pupils at school who wish to opt out of the formal academic route. The target group are those pupils who at the age of fourteen to sixteen are seeking an alternative educational system that
challenges them to develop and demonstrate their individual capabilities and creative skills. The provision of the vocational/occupational programmes provided by Southern Group Enterprises Limited is an extension to the secondary level of the mainstream educational system. The benefit of this is two fold in that it enhances and supports the career departments within the local schools by providing the opportunity for work related training for pupils during school time and secondly the beneficiaries, the pupils, gain through maximising their potential through: - obtaining a vocational career and the feeling of self esteem and respect from this achievement. - attaining relevant academic and vocational qualifications but also - developing life skills both at a personal and social level. The age at which pupils enter the vocational/occupational programmes is one that Southern Group Enterprises Limited see as a defining time of a young person's life during which time their personality/expectations are determined and defined for later life. The public purpose therefore expressed in the objects clause is the starting point under which education can provide a stable environment and base for each young person going forward. As for the community the benefit derived is that upon entering society at large the pupils have become young adults displaying responsibility and self belief within themselves that originates through the acquisition of skills attained within the educational programme.

The organisation provides an alternative education programme to young people who have not adapted to mainstream schooling at Year 11 and Year 12 from schools in the Newry and Mourne area. Senior teachers from the schools identify young people who are not suited to the GCSE exam route and whom they believe are in danger of disengaging from formal
education or who are unlikely to gain any formal qualification before leaving school. The aim of the programme is to work with small groups of young people to ensure that they complete Year 12 with qualifications and experience to take them forward into further training or into the workplace. The young person attends the programme at Year 11 on a one or two day a week basis and at Year 12 has the opportunity to attend either on a five day basis or remain with the one to two day programme. The School Training Education Partnership Scheme (STEPS) is a five day programme whereby the young people work towards a Level 2 qualification in English, Maths, ICT and a vocational qualification of their choice such as brickwork, tiling, hairdressing etc. The Vocational Enhancement Programme (VEP) is the one to two day programme where the young person works towards a vocational qualification and ICT qualification at Year 11 and Year 12. The qualifications achieved are all validated by either the CCEA and the City & Guilds awarding bodies. The programmes also addresses employment and personal development issues that may act as a barrier in preventing them from achieving their potential. The programmes are monitored each year to ensure the quality of qualifications is maintained and delivered in a manner to enable their progression in life within the community. In September 2014 29 young people completed the STEPS programme 20 progressed to further education colleges, 5 to training organisations, 1 gained employment with 3 not responding. Through this young people are given a solid grounding in life skills for their future.
