Public benefits

The achievement of our objective leads to a number of public benefits which we achieve in the following way: Purpose 1 – Provide information leading to the relief of those in need by reason of ill health and disability through the provision of information elicited from the local newspapers and other relevant sources which keeps them in touch with

their community and offers information on available activities relevant to their disability together with items of historical and general interest to them as members of our community. • an increase in the knowledge of local news, activities and events which increase the awareness of matters of import to the recipients in their daily lives • an ability to relate to what is going on in the local community and to those in the local community that the recipients may know and may have known in the past • an increase in the ability to actively relate to those around them by having the knowledge to engage with others in discussing local matters and helps them to take part fully in local activities and to keep them informed of events relevant to them and their community • a reduction in the feelings of exclusion, stress, anxiety and depression that can sometimes be associated with an inability to keep in touch with local affairs and items of topical, historical or general interest. Purpose 2 – Free provision of audio recordings and / or digital transmissions delivered weekly to homes. • advancement of citizenship or community development. • Our service is free to those who request it, to those who are referred to us through such sources as Social Services and though others such as medical professionals or the RNIB. • The trustees believe that this purpose and the benefits flowing from it are in keeping with the area of description in the Charities Act NI ( 2008 ) relating to “the relief of those in need by reason of age, disability or other disadvantage". • Because the service is free to all our listeners it is available to all no matter what their financial situation might be. Purpose 3 – Discretionary provision of equipment. • We can often provide potential listeners with suitable equipment for listening to our communications. This enables them to take our material on a weekly basis and so receive the other benefits that our communications provide. • Our service is free to all our listeners and is available to all no matter what their financial situation might be. Purpose 4 – Social integration. Losing one’s sight or having difficulty in keeping in touch with local events can be very isolating and so the public benefit here is achieved by providing such information that keeps our listeners involved and informed with local information on events in the Causeway area, activities directly and indirectly related to their health and disability and gives them information of general and historical interest which contributes to social inclusion. Our listeners primarily live in the Causeway area of Northern Ireland or have some connection to that area. The organisation strives to promote social inclusion to those who would otherwise be isolated from events taking place in their community and enables them to keep up to date with local news and participate in local activities. There is no harm arising from our association’s purpose. The service provides direct benefit to our intended beneficiaries. Benefits arise from our charitable purpose. There is no private benefit from our purpose or activities but we acknowledge that volunteers may derive some incidental benefit from their involvement in such areas as skills in administration, the use and operation of equipment, an increase in speaking in public etc. These are necessary by-products which are important in the continuing improvement of our provision and as such are essential to the effective provision of that service.

What your organisation does

Coleraine and District Talking News (CTN) is based in the NW of Ireland and caters for listeners who live in, or have some connection to, the Causeway area. CTN has 50 blind and partially sighted listeners, mainly, but not exclusively, over the age of 65. We provide a weekly recording of local news and items of general interest gathered from

various sources. The audio disk is delivered to the Library in Ballymena which makes copies for distribution. The CDs are put into distinctive yellow wallets and delivered by first class post free of charge by the Post Office. The CD is posted back in the same wallet. Approximately 20 volunteers work from our studio on a monthly rota. Each recording lasts about 1.5 hours. There is no joining fee and listeners receive the recordings free of charge. CTN is now funded by donations from individuals and is part of a network of Talking Newspapers operating in Northern Ireland and beyond. The Association strives to promote social inclusion to those who would otherwise be isolated from events taking place in their community.
