Public benefits

The public benefit which flows from the purpose is the development of exceptional charity leaders in the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland through the provision of networking and education opportunities that enhances knowledge, skills and understanding of best practice in leadership and management. Charities, voluntary and

community organisations in Northern Ireland will be better governed, directed and managed as a result of the charity leaders receiving education and training from CO3 and so will be more efficient and effective. The wider benefit is that the community is better served and the general public have more confidence in the ability of those directing and managing charity, voluntary and community organisations in Northern Ireland. The benefits can be demonstrated through the CO3 Annual reports and through the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of work being carried out by CO3 which includes annual membership surveys, feedback from participants at training and events and regular independent evaluation of our services. There is no harm in providing education and training to Charity Leaders.

What your organisation does

CO3 Chief Officers Third Sector is a membership organisation for leaders of charities, voluntary and community groups in Northern Ireland. We use the term charity leaders as a broad term to describe the people who have control and management of a charity, voluntary and community organisation in Northern Ireland. They may be called Chief Executive

Officer, Directors, Managers, Trustees and Committee Members. CO3 provides a range of support to ensure best practice leadership is adopted in the Northern Ireland Voluntary and Community Sector. CO3 provides practical support in the form of guidance, advice, information and signposting to community and voluntary organisations. The support on offer includes information, training and advice in areas such as (but not limited to) governance, charity law, fundraising, financial management, social enterprise, social media, risk management, human resources, advocacy, and management. CO3 has a particular focus on leadership development and has produced a competency framework for chief executives in the voluntary and community sector. CO3 delivers a range of leadership development programmes for different leaders including (but not limited to) Chief Executives, Senior Managers, and Charity Trustees. CO3 facilitates a range of peer learning opportunities including a mentoring programme, special interest groups and networking events where leaders can come together to exchange ideas and share best practice. CO3 disseminates information through a range of mediums including our email briefing, website, Twitter, LinkedIn as well as hard copy publications. In addition, CO3 runs conferences and awards to raise awareness of the importance of good leadership practice, to provide thought leadership, insight and share best practice. CO3 also provides a counselling service to support Charity leaders in crisis.

Charitable purposes

The objects of the Company are to promote the efficiency and development of the Voluntary Sector for the benefit of the Community through the advancement of education, training, science and research, particularly in the fields of leadership, management skills and good practice. Voluntary Sector - shall have the meaning Charities and Community and Voluntary Organisations. Charities - shall have the meaning organisations which are established for exclusively charitable purposes in accordance with the law in Northern Ireland. Community and Voluntary Organisations - shall have the meaning independent organisations which are established for the purposes that add value to the community as a whole, or a significant section of the community, and which are not permitted by their constitution to make a profit for private distribution. Voluntary organisations do not include local government or other statutory authorities.
