Public benefits

The trustees believe that both our purposes satisfy both elements of the public benefit requirement. Purpose 1 - promotion of the amateur sport of kayak surfing and waveskiing. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the development of physical and mental skills by the participants in the sport, and the development of a healthy

and active lifestyle through engaging with outdoor recreational pursuits. These benefits will be demonstrated through ongoing verbal feedback from participants, comments on social media and by conducting surveys. We will also monitor the numbers of individuals who go on to take up full club membership after introductory come and try it/training days. This evidence will be presentable as a report at the AGM. This purpose may potentially lead to harm in the sense of physical injury, although this is not frequent. This harm is outweighed by the benefits of improved physical and mental skills gained by participants. Reasonable precautions would always be taken to minimise the possibility of such harm arising, for example by conducting proper risk assessments and safety briefing at all events, and maintaining appropriate coach to paddler ratios as recommended by British canoeing. The charity’s beneficiaries are all people of the province of Ulster who are interested in the amateur sport of kayak surfing and waveskiing. Such people may attend one-off events, or may join the club, which has an open membership. In the case of junior participants/members parental permission would be required for safety reasons. A private benefit to some individuals may arise from our programme of activities in that some of our members and/or trustees are suitably qualified surfkayak coaches, who may, on occasion, be paid at a reasonable rate for their services. Some of their services would also be provided on a voluntary basis. Another benefit which could arise is that volunteers may gain skills and experience which could be transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to allow us to carry out our purpose. Purpose 2 – developing the competitive aspect of the sport. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the further development of physical and mental skills and fitness, as well as qualities of commitment, discipline, perseverance and a sense of good sporting ethics which are all needed in order to improve to a competitive level. These benefits will be demonstrated through feedback received from amateur athletes following their participation in competitive events, and through measuring their progress in terms of competition results. Engaging in the amateur sport of kayak surfing and waveskiing at a competitive level may potentially lead to harm in the sense of physical injury, as previously. Again this would tend be outweighed by the benefits. Competitions would be run under World Surf Kayak Association Rules, and World Waveski Association Rules which would minimise the risks to competitors. The charity’s beneficiaries are all people of the province of Ulster who are interested in participating in the amateur sport of kayak surfing and waveskiing at a competitive level. This may be at a Local, National or International level, depending on abilities and circumstances. A private benefit to some individuals may arise from this purpose in that their prospects of succeeding at a high level in the sport may be enhanced by their association with the activities of the charity. Certain trustees and/or their family members may also benefit from competitive workshops, or may receive assistance with funding for competitive events. Such trustees and/or their family members would follow the same criteria as all other beneficiaries for such training and/or assistance. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to all our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

The organisation is a province-wide club, which exists to promote the amateur sport of kayak surfing and waveskiing. We host training, social and competitive events, and provide resources for loan or hire. We engage in fund-raising activities in order to carry out our objectives and spend such funds as appropriate. For example, The Club may

purchase and maintain equipment and facilities as deemed necessary, employ coaches, and give grants to individual club members in the support of their competitive progress. The organisation previously operated, from 2001, as the Northern Ireland Surf Kayak Club. The new name was adopted at an EGM on 31/01/2015 in order to better reflect the provincial nature of the membership, as well as to formally include wave-skiers as well as surf kayakers
