Public benefits

The Belfast Philharmonic Society meets the public requirement in the following ways: 1. The advancement of arts, culture, heritage or science through the provision of rehearsals and training for members of the choir and also regular performances at its own concerts and at concerts with the Ulster Orchestra. The direct benefits which flow from

this purpose include the promotion of music and in particular choral singing in Northern Ireland. The Society also promotes and encourages high standards in the arts. Before joining the choir applicants are auditioned and members are regularly re-auditioned in order to maintain standards. The benefits are demonstrated through regular evaluation of services and feedback from beneficiaries. This purpose does not lead to harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are those members of the choir and also the wider public who benefit through the concerts put on by the Society. There is no private benefit. 2. The advancement of education through the provision of rehearsals and training for members of the choir. The Society consists of an adult choir with a membership in excess of 100 people and ‘Phil Kids’ which consists of around 320 children ranging from age 8 to 18. The Society, through its performances and concerts, seeks to raise awareness, understanding and enjoyment of music and in particular choral singing for the general public. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the provision of opportunities for members of the choir to learn and develop their choral singing ability. There is also direct benefit to the general public who learn to appreciate, understand and enjoy music and in particular choral singing. The benefits are demonstrated through regular evaluation of services and feedback from beneficiaries. This purpose does not lead to harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are those members of the choir who avail of the opportunities to learn and develop their choral singing ability. The general public also benefit through learning and appreciating the value and enjoyment that can be derived from choral singing. There is no private benefit.

We encourage composers, instrumentalists and singers of merit by introducing their works and talent to the public.

Charitable purposes

The mission statement of the Society is: The Belfast Philharmonic Society’s mission is to perform choral work to the highest standard engaging the greatest number of people possible through its concert and training programmes and contributing to the musical and cultural life of the city of Belfast and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Society’s Objects are: 1. to advance the arts and culture by the promotion, practice and performance of choral works; 2. to foster and develop musical standards and the knowledge and taste of the public by providing public performances of the best works in music; and 3. to encourage composers, instrumentalists and singers of merit by introducing their works and talent to the public
