Public benefits

The primary direct benefit that flows from this purpose is an increased understanding and application of the principles of sustainable development so as to improve the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the communities of district councils. Through the adoption of good sustainability practices in council functions and services, social

and economic benefits are delivered for residents without causing excessive environmental impacts. These benefits may be evidenced through regular internal and external qualitative assessment; through annual reporting of our charitable activities and audited financial performance in the annual reports of Sustainable NI, as well as regular project evaluations, reports for funders and user surveys. The charity’s beneficiaries are the residents of the eleven district councils in Northern Ireland. There is no harm arising from the purpose that has been set out above. No individual within the organisation nor any other organisation gains a private benefit from the purpose of the company and its outworkings.

What your organisation does

SNI works with public sector organisations, principally district councils, to advance sustainable development by acting as a catalyst organisation in stimulating positive action towards a more sustainable society; by organising and facilitating a forum for council officers for professional development; by holding exhibitions, meetings, lectures and

classes to facilitate learning; by publishing reports, web-based articles and other documents; by undertaking research into aspects of sustainable development; by maintaining an active link of communication between the public and local government; by providing evidence for government and other inquiries.
