Public benefits
The Charity’s intended beneficiaries are the people who can benefit from our Charitable Purposes. Any person within the catchment area of the Western Health and Social Care Trust, who attends Altnagelvin Hospital as an outpatient, day-patient, or in-patient with any illness, may potentially benefit from our charitable work. We also provide
comfort items for relatives and carers of these patients. Attending hospital can be a stressful life event (Holmes & Rahe) 1994. The Friends of Altnagelvin can contribute to making the hospital a more therapeutic environment and less intimidating, by reducing the threatening ‘medical’ setting with all its instrumentation and strange sights. We buy items over and above what the NHS standard stock Procurement can provides, e.g. non-stock items such as baby strollers, reclining chairs for relatives/carers overnight stays, Last Offices box, water-less shampoo caps for bed-bound patients and those who cannot access the shower, and much more. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are an improved healing environment and improvements in the patient experience, reducing stress and anxiety. The benefits are evidenced through the letters of thanks received from Departmental and Ward Sisters/Managers who are grateful for every little gift towards patients comforts that we can provide, conveying the thanks and appreciation expressed by patients and relatives during their stay. We have also received letters of thanks for gifts received of patient comforts from the Trust Chief Executives over our period of activity. There is no harm from these benefits as we do not provide medical equipment or technology. Before any purchase is made on behalf of the Wards/Departments, we check the proposed purchase with the following Hospital Authorities, where appropriate: • Infection prevention and control; • Fire department; • Estates (small power electrical checks, maintenance requirements); • Catering Department; • Grounds Manager; • Water Engineer (ice/water machines) Any risk assessments are carried by the requesting individual ward/department to ensure compliance with Trust policies and procedures.

The Friends of Altnagelvin serve the local hospital attending community by: 1. Undertaking fundraising activities, such as Coffee Evenings, Cake and Home Produce sales, Annual Golf Tournament, Flag days, and any other opportunities that present themselves, in keeping with the constitution; 2. Write out to all Wards and Departments within the
Hospital inviting request for the patient comfort items required in their area; 3. A sub-Committee meets to review the requests received and decides if the items meet the Friends criterion, i.e. purely patient comfort item not ordinarily purchased by the Trust; 4. Consult with the Trust Procurement Sub-Committee to ascertain the appropriateness of the purchases within Trust policies and procedures, as well as Procurement regulations; 5. Arrange for procurement of approved items and delivery to appropriate area, and follow normal Trust Asset log requirements, where necessary.
