Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of DYFC include: (1) opportunities for young people in Donaghadee to learn about Christianity in a way that they understand and to have the opportunity to study Christianity, embrace it for themselves and ultimately become members of local churches. (2) enabling young people in Donaghadee to grow up

in a spiritually enlightened environment, supported and accepted irrespective of their background or degree of church involvement. (3) the practical outworking of the Christian faith through the promotion and demonstration of a strong, moral, ethical lifestyle to young people, helping them make better lifestyle choices and giving them a better understanding of Christian citizenship through involvement in Christian programs and activities. (4) the positive effect on the community and anti-social behavior of young people. (5) the provision of a consultative space to interact with young people and to seek their views on issues of faith. (6) more cooperation and understanding between the youth workers and other members of the churches in the town of Donaghadee in relation to their youth work provision. (7) in working alongside the established churches, as a para-church organisation, and with their support, DYFC can act as a conduit between young people with no church connection and the churches’ youth work provision. These benefits are evidenced by feedback from young people, local churches, schools and families. The PSNI also report in relation to the ongoing standard of behavior of the young people in the area and how this is impacted positively by the work of DYFC. Churches report on new members joining their congregations and where young people are becoming more involved. Parents provide feedback on the positive effects that DYFC is having on their children. The SEELB assesses and monitors the work of DYFC and part-funds it as part of its youth work provision. The numbers of young people using the services of DYFC are also recorded and reported periodically. The purposes of our charity may lead to the following harm in that it is perceived by those of other religions or no religion that DYFC is trying to force Christianity on young people at a stage in life when they are easily influenced. We can show that this harm is outweighed by the benefits through the charity’s commitment to the policy of 'believing is not a requirement for belonging', and that accepting or following the Christian religion is not a requirement of those young people wishing to avail of the charity’s services and programs. This harm is also significantly reduced by the policies and procedures in place, for example safeguarding and child protection policy, health and safety policy, code of conduct for staff and volunteers. The charity’s benefits are provided to young people aged typically from 10-18 years from Donaghadee and the surrounding area.

What your organisation does

DYFC runs a 'drop-in' centre at 11 High Street, Donaghadee where young people both from churched and unchurched backgrounds can encounter the Gospel in a relevant way and can be discipled. Staffed by one full-time and one part-time staff member, along with a team of trained volunteers, the centre is open for 10 hours each week and offers a range

of activities, games, structured programmes, Bible study groups, prayer meetings and worship events for all young people in the Donaghadee area, alongside the traditional 'drop in' type facility. The centre also runs education/training courses for young people looking at citizenship and lifestyle issues such as drugs and alcohol awareness, sexuality, teen pregnancy, road safety, facilitated by both staff members and external providers. DYFC offers a counselling service to any young person on a wide range of issues. DYFC also provides activities for young people outside the centre including trips, camps and sporting events. DYFC carries out outreach work from the centre, which may include visitation of schools, street evangelism, summer teams work and events of all kinds designed to present young people with the Gospel. DYFC runs evangelistic events, participates in church services and engages in such activities as are deemed necessary or desirable for the attainment of the purpose. DYFC runs a charity shop in the town of Donaghadee, the proceeds of which go towards supporting the work of the centre. DYFC cooperates with the churches in Donaghadee and other organisations, the aims of which are similar in character, in promoting evangelism particularly among young people.
