Public benefits
Purpose one (Advancing Education): The direct benefit which flows from this purpose is the education of the pre-school child i.e. to develop a range of life skills, self-improvement e.g. self-esteem/self confidence, independent skills and pastoral care of the children within the Greater Shantallow Area. These benefits are evidenced through
curriculum plan covering the 6 areas of learning, official government statistics, inspection reports & feedback from the community & individual service users. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. Beneficiaries of this purpose are residents aged between 0-4 years & their parents/grand parents within the Greater Shantallow Area. A private benefit to St Joseph’s Community Playgroup staff (salaries) & volunteers may arise i.e. training, however these are necessary to deliver the programmes & ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

St Joseph’s Community Playgroup is a pre-school service that was set up in 1977 for children living within the Galliagh area (Shantallow West). The Playgroup is a purpose built centre which is situated on the grounds of St Joseph’s Church. It has a welcoming, friendly, caring atmosphere where children can grow in confidence, self-esteem and
independence. The Playgroup offers a programme of play, which will develop the child socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually based on the curricular Guidance for pre-school education published by the Department of Education. A key worker system is in place; which ensures a high level of individual attention for each child in our care. We encourage parents/guardians to be actively involved in the education of their child. St Joseph’s Community Playgroup operates a total of 5 sessions per week, Monday to Friday from 9.00 am until 12.00 pm & on Tuesday they run a Parent & Toddler group from 1 to 2.30 pm The Playgroup employs three staff members, all of whom are qualified to NVQ Level 3 & one person is qualified to HNC Level. All staff members keep up-to-date with current training in all areas i.e. Child Protection, First Aid, Health & Hygiene. St Joseph’s Community Playgroup is registered with the Western Health and Social Care Trust and is a member of Early Years, the organization for young children.
