Public benefits

“To promote the physical and mental health of carers and those persons with severe learning disabilities for whom they are caring by the provision of a respite service for such carers”. The direct benefits that flow from this purpose include: Time off from caring - The provision of regular respite breaks from caring responsibilities enables family

carers to have time off from caring and maintain good physical and mental health. The respite sessions provided helps carers recharge their batteries secure in the knowledge that their relative is being well cared for and supported. Reduced stress levels – Carers can take a break secure in the knowledge that their relative is being well cared for and doing something that they enjoy. Caring Breaks provides them with “conscience free respite” at regular intervals throughout the year which helps carers to reduce stress their levels and maintain their health and well-being. Reduced social isolation - Regular respite breaks from caring also enables family carers to pursue their own interests and helps them feel less socially isolated enabling them to become more involved in the local community. Regular short respite breaks from caring also enables carers to maintain relationships with other family members including extended family and friends. Promote physical and mental health - Adults with severe learning disabilities are provided with support to enable them to be more physically and socially active. A range of recreational and leisure activities are provided during the respite sessions which improve the health and well-being of adults with learning disabilities. In turn carers are able to pursue their own interests and participate in the life of the local community. Reduce social isolation – Adults with severe learning disabilities are supported to meet and engage with their peers in a safe and happy environment. Activities are community based and help adults with severe learning disabilities become more socially included in their local community. These benefits are evidenced by regular and independent evaluation of the service along with informal feedback from family carers and adults with a learning disability themselves and by reports from health care professionals. Risk of Harm Our service involves transporting adults with severe learning disabilities in vehicles owned by our staff or hired from a vehicle rental company. Checks are in place to ensure that all vehicles are fit for purpose and fully insured to transport clients. Accidents are extremely rare and the benefits of our service outweigh any risks. Private Benefit Some private benefit is gained by a director who receives respite from Caring Breaks. A referral was received in the usual way from the local health trust for this individual and respite is assigned in the same way as for all beneficiaries therefore it is incidental.
