Public benefits
The direct benefit to flow from purpose: (a) Contribution to the prevention of older people’s social exclusion, allowing older people to feel safer and more secure, promoting their physical and mental health (such as exercise classes and educational and leisure activities), supporting them to remain living at home (such as meal delivery service),
facilitating their re-engagement in employment where appropriate, ensuring they are receiving all their welfare entitlements, and ensuring that they have access to transport in order to undertake their daily tasks. (b) The creation of opportunity for recreation and leisure time for older people which plays a vital role in combating social isolation and loneliness, both for people living alone and people living with others. The provision of opportunity for social contact, which can reduce the harmful effects of psychological stress. (c) Providing information, advice and advocacy are crucially important in promoting older people’s independence. Information, advice and advocacy offer skills, services and processes of empowerment for older people. (d) To be inclusive, to help older people to stay healthy and active and to encourage their contribution to the community. Investing in opportunities and taking action to shape things for the better. (e) Challenging the negative stereotypes of people from all cultures and working towards a society in which there is a common vision and sense of belonging by all communities. (f) Encouraging better use of resources by reducing duplication and identifying opportunities for collaboration. Any harm that may flow from the purposes such as slips, trips and falls is addressed through the process of risk assessment and application of health and safety procedures and this harm is outweighed by the benefits. There is no private benefit flowing from the purposes. The public beneficiaries are older people, being those aged 60 years and over who live within the Mid Ulster Council Area. Direct participation from 185+ beneficiaries, feedback and demand evidence the public benefits elements as stated above.
