Public benefits

All profit from ReNeW for Cancer Research charity shop goes towards cancer Research in the UK therefore the main public benefit is the advancement of health which will lead to the saving of lives. The trustees decide each year who to donate the monies raised to and this is generally a charity such as Cancer Research UK to ensure the best use of

monies and provide the direct benefit of further monies being available for research. In addition the charity has also opened a vacant building to a reusable position and thereby enhanced the appearance of the Square in Portaferry. This, as well as the recycling of resources, is part of the advancement of environmental improvement. Portaferry is in a deprived area and therefore, by selling items at a low cost, we are also providing help to those in need due to financial hardship. An indirect benefit is the comradeship of volunteers and the fact that many lonely people have made friends with other volunteers. A wider benefit is that our volunteers feel that they are contributing to a wonderful cause, cancer research, as well as to the community. This raises self-esteem, especially among our older or unemployed volunteers. Recently we have been able to assist an unemployed person through the 'Steps to Work' scheme and this person is also benefiting indirectly and thus contributing to the community also. These benefits can be demonstrated through numbers of people volunteering and becoming involved in the organisation, continued sales of goods and feedback from those using the shop and the volunteers and also from those organisations that we donate to. There is no private benefit flowing from the purposes.

What your organisation does

ReNeW for cancer research collects donated unwanted items, or accepts them when brought to the premises. Such items, after sorting and cleaning, are sold in our charity shop. All profit, after rent and heating, are given to Cancer Research (UK) and other local N. Ireland cancer charities. We have over twenty volunteers who assist with this. We

also have eight trustees. The shop is open four days a week. There are no paid members of staff. All funds raised are triple checked by trustees before being banked. Volunteers receive training as well as a handbook of best practice, health and safety regulations and complaints procedures.
