Public benefits
The Society is established for charitable purposes only, to advance, through education, an appreciation and understanding of the history of East Belfast and its culture and heritage. This purpose will be achieved through - • Regular monthly lectures, • Occasional visits to locations of historical interest, • Providing relevant literature,
• Promoting the publication of articles of local interest and a society journal, and • The hosting of a website (currently undergoing reconstruction). There is no harm flowing from our purpose. The benefits flowing directly from this purpose will be demonstrated through - • Increased awareness and understanding of matters regarding the history of East Belfast, the wider city and Northern Ireland in general using acknowledged experts from a wide variety of backgrounds; • The development of a greater interest in local history, culture and heritage and the factors which influenced the development of the local cultural environment; • Access to historic buildings and places during visits and information gained from experts in their history. The beneficiaries will be primarily, but not exclusively, the paid-up members of the Society; others who will gain are the residents East Belfast (to whom membership is open), in addition to researchers and visitors wishing to develop a better appreciation and understanding of local history, culture and heritage. These benefits are evidenced by feedback from members which informs our choices for lectures and outings. There is no private benefit flowing from our purpose.

We host a programme of historical lectures from September to May which is open to members and visitors, with speakers chosen to reflect a diverse range of subjects on local and regional history. We publish a members’ newsletter and a biennial historical journal. We endeavour to answer queries about local history received by post and e-mail.
Additional activities include visits to local places and objects of historical interest which are open to members, visitors and any person with an interest in history, heritage and culture.
