Public benefits

The public benefit that follows from our purpose includes promotion to the general public the study maritime history of the area of the Lough Foyle and also in the U.K. and Ireland is by bringing likeminded people together to reminisce and remember the heritage of maritime history. The past is all around us. We live our lives against a rich

backdrop formed by historic buildings, machinery and artefacts, landscapes and other physical survivals of our past. But the historic environment is more than just a matter of material remains. It is central to how we see ourselves and to our identity as individuals, communities and as a nation. It is a physical record of what our country is and how it came to be and its study enhances capacity and education and health and well-being of those participating in the group activities. Reminiscing with other people can be a therapeutic process of sharing memories which can help individuals achieve a sense of integrity and self- worth, preserving personal and collective history promoting self-understanding. It will encourage members to be social which in turn elevates stress and anxiety which helps with a healthier lifestyle in general. These benefits are evidenced through feedback from participants which is ongoing and we also keep a record of attendance and records of our activities. The charity’s beneficiaries are the general public living in Northern Ireland from all backgrounds regardless of age, religion, race and income that have an interest in the history of shipping and particularly shipping on the Foyle. A private benefit to trustees may arise from any training in good governance, finance etc. Through this training trustees gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. There is no possibility of harm as we only provide information and support from professionals in this field of expertise and utilise venues which are safe and comfortable and accessible to all.
