Public benefits

The direct benefit which flows from promoting and protecting the physical and mental health of children and young people with autism and related conditions is that stress and anxiety is being relieved by both the children and young people and their parents or carers. Through facilitating a support network to parents and carers which provides

advice, information and support, they are better able to deal with the anxieties that they may feel and get helpful advice on how to deal with managing their loved one with this disability. Parents are able to learn improved coping strategies which are developed for children with autism. Through the provision of recreational facilities and out-of-school activities and programmes for the children and young people they are benefitting from communicating with others with a similar disability in a safe environment, a place where they can be themselves which helps promote their self-esteem. This is demonstrated through numbers of parents attending our support group and activities, we currently have over one hundred members. We continually ask for feedback from both parents and children and will continue to seek feedback and get suggestions for future work. There is no harm or private benefit from our work.

What your organisation does

We are a group of parents who identified a gap in the provision of services for parents and carers of children diagnosed or awaiting diagnosis of autism or related conditions. We meet fortnightly to provide support and/or training to parents and carers of children diagnosed or awaiting diagnosis of autism or related conditions. We work with

numerous other autism specific agencies in order to signpost or access training to bring to SHINE members. We seek to raise awareness of the condition of autism and lobby regularly with local goverment agencies in order to identify gaps and improve provision.
