Public benefits

The charity trustees (Committee) are satisfied that both elements of public benefit are met. The beneficiaries of our services are carers (or caregivers) within the southwest area of Northern Ireland, namely Fermanagh and Tyrone. ‘Carers’ are those who provide unpaid care, often providing substantial support to persons who are frail or have

chronic or age related health and support needs, mental health problems or physical or learning disabilities. The 2011 Census showed that about 12,500 adults identified themselves as carers in the Fermanagh and Omagh area. The direct benefits flowing to them include reduced social isolation, opportunities for peer support and advice, an improved recognition and understanding around the caring role and the needs which emerge relating to both the cared-for person and the carer themselves, a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of a carer and, importantly, their rights and entitlements, better access to up to date information about developments affecting their role, self empowerment to help them sustain their caring role and in turn provide assistance to others. Further benefits include advice and information concerning health and social care, social security matters, housing and carer needs assessments, including understanding of the systems around health and social care, housing, supported living, person centred planning, circles of support and special educational needs. The benefits are demonstrable through our carer database, appropriate diagnoses, comprehensive needs assessments, information on the development of specialist services, close links with other local organisations etc. There are no harms arising from the purposes. There are no private benefits to any unintended beneficiaries. If and when a benefit to committee members is gained, this is incidental or necessary and gained in the same way as other beneficiaries e.g. through fellow carers sharing knowledge and experience of existing services and the provision of advocacy on a voluntary basis by other carers to support the carer in obtaining assistance.

What your organisation does

We are a small local organisation driven by carers who volunteer their time and knowledge to maintain the organisation, help local carers and act as an independent voice for local carers We maintain a carer database inviting carers to provide their contact details and information about the type of illness or disability of the person they care

for. We put carers in touch with other carers with similar interests to discuss common needs and concerns. We provide advice and information concerning health and social care, social security matters, housing and carer needs assessments, including understanding of the systems around health and social care, housing, supported living, person centred planning, circles of support and special educational needs. Our independence enables carers to assist other carers with recommendations and guidance about services and to provide confidentiality and the freedom for carers to talk openly about stresses and fear and where necessary to manage complaints. We maintain close links with other local organisations providing traditional services. We welcome associate membership from these groups and attend their meetings to update them on matters of interest to carers. We maintain and continue to develop a large knowledge base around a diverse number of disabilities and assist carers in obtaining appropriate diagnoses and comprehensive needs assessments what local services are available for carers to access as well as providing information on development of specialist services. We promote the participation of local carers in the decision making around services for the cared for person as well as the involvement of carers in the planning of services both in health and social care as well as within the community.
