Public benefits
(a) The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the giving of grants at Christmas and mid-summer. At Christmas this helps with the extra expense that is incurred with presents, food etc., and also providing fuel to cope with the winter heating of their homes. The summer grant is targeted at such household jobs as hedge cutting, spout
cleaning, painting etc. Many of our recipients are getting elderly and no longer fit to do these small jobs around their homes so they find it useful to be able to employ someone locally to do the work. By giving the grants at Christmas and Mid-summer and the flowers at Easter it affords our District Representatives the opportunity to visit our recipients and keep themselves updated on their health and wellbeing. As stated above many are now elderly and living alone and the visit in itself is as beneficial as the gift that is being delivered. The Welfare function gives our District Representatives an opportunity to mingle with all the recipients and not just those from their own District. It also gives the recipients the opportunity to meet others in similar circumstances to themselves whom they had never met before. Indeed many friendships have been formed as a result of these functions which otherwise wouldn’t have taken place. Many of the beneficiaries have expressed their appreciation that the Orange Order cares and is prepared to help them in the unexpected situation in which they find themselves having tragically lost the breadwinner in the home. (b) These benefits are demonstrated as all grants given are acknowledged, you can gauge the benefit from the responses received and through personal contact with the beneficiaries. (c) There is no obvious harm that can result from the purposes of our charity. (d) The charity’s beneficiaries are widows and orphans of members of the Orange Institution in County Tyrone who were murdered or killed as a result of terrorist activity. (e) There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose as all the work is done on a voluntary basis by the committee members who were initially selected within each District because of their communication skills. Any incidental expenses for printing, postage, accommodation etc. are covered by the County Tyrone Grand Orange Lodge and not taken from the Charity’s funds.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
There are currently 25 widows on the roll of the Society in County Tyrone and each year we give them a Christmas Grant, provide them with flowers prior to Easter, Take them out for a meal and social function in the late Spring and send them a maintenance grant during the summer to deal with normal household expenses. The grants and flowers are
personally delivered by Trustee members in their respective areas, thus keeping us in regular contact to deal with any needs or concerns that arise from time to time. This Social interaction gives the widows an opportunity to meet others in similar circumstances to themselves and build relationships that otherwise would never have been possible. We keep them updated on grants available from organizations such as the Memorial Fund and those of a similar ethos in the 'Victims' sector.
