What your organisation does

Gortin Afternoon Club was established in 1976 to provide activities and support for the older people from the Gortin and surrounding area. Our objectives are to operate a club where older people can come and socialise; to provide transport to the club; to arrange activities such as arts/crafts, games and so on; to provide afternoon refreshments

and home baking and to provide occasional trips. Our remit is for older people (age range of current members is 60-101) in the Gortin village and surrounding rural areas and we meet every Tuesday. Those taking part in our activities get a sense of enjoyment as well as getting out of the house and socialising with their neighbours and contemporaries. This is often difficult due to social and geographic isolation. Many of our members are widowed women, some still have their partner but many are lonely and like to get out to our activities. We have a blind lady who attends and gets great enjoyment from the club as well as many with disabilities. This also gives respite for carers. We give out keep warm bags as we can avail of them to older people so that they have blankets and warm clothes in the winter
