Public benefits

Cairde na mBeann was created because we understand that education does not exist solely within the walls of our schools. We feel that children and adults can learn in any environment when the correct resources are available to them through delivering classes, lessons through music, the arts and culture. Our motto is: “An lae nach bhfoghluíonn

rud éigin úr is bocht an lá é” – “A day you don’t learn is a day wasted” Children who attend both schools are the main beneficiaries of our group. Their lives are enriched through bilingualism. We instill important values which include, respect for differences in races and religions, love for culture and arts, appreciation and acceptance of oneself, their neighbors and friends regardless of ability, sex, colour. We support, staff, carers/parents. This support encourages other members of their families and the general public to participate in events funded by Cairde na mBeann. It encourages the children as they get to see other family members and friends learning through the medium of Irish. There are 38 children currently receiving Irish medium education within Gaelscoil and 25 registered in Naíscoil. These figure have grown year-on-year, it is very humbling to see that what started out nearly 10 years ago as a small mother/toddler group has emerged into the great established school that we have today. We are growing every year and because of our growth we are currently relocating the schools to larger premises as we have out-grown our current location. This all bodes well for the future of our schools and with the increase in numbers we are supporting more parents/carers through funded classes. We have classes on Monday and Wednesday nights, there are currently more than 20 adults availing of these classes. Every 3 months we host a “Dianchúrsa”, an intensive course which is held on a Saturday. During the day participants can choose which level of learning they are at. Some people start off at the beginner class but progress to intermediate by afternoon. The numbers attending are continually growing, something we are very proud of as this lets us know that there is a need and a demand for this special service. We have adopted safety measures and policies which cover child protection. We have Access NI checks carried out on all our committee and volunteers. All teachers who take part in the Dianchúrsa classes are also vetted. Any monies we receive through sales or donations are funneled back into both schools through the purchase of resources, funding for travel, musical tuition and summer fun-day and summer schemes. ADVANCEMENT OF ARTS, CULTURE, HERITAGE OR SCIENCE We welcome everyone regardless of race, religion or ethnic background. We encourage everyone to use our facilities in Páirc na Mara to enhance their learning of the language, music and the arts. We support local musicians and artists. We feel we are providing a service for people who want to choose an alternative language to English. We also feel that we are encouraging inclusiveness, harmony, respect and acceptance of different cultures. We can demonstrate these benefits through on-going people participation in the classes we provide. We receive very positive feedback through questionnaires and surveys which we conduct to assess if we are including everything that the public require. As a result of this we are hoping to commence “Club Cócaireacht”, a cooking club delivered through the medium of Irish. We hope to embark on this new initiative in September 2015 funding dependent. Anyone who chooses to participate in our classes will be a beneficiary. Our classes are open to everyone regardless of race, religion and ethnic background. We are proud to say that some of our parents who participate in our events are from Polish, Malaysian, Irish and English backgrounds to name a few.

What your organisation does

We provide financial support and resources to Naíscoil/Gaelscoil, staff and parents/carers who have chosen Irish medium education for their children. We also proudly support “Páirc na Mara,” our local Irish language and cultural centre. We provide funding for anyone who wishes to learn the Irish language, classes are held in Páirc na Mara. We

have an annual program of fundraising events which include: Christmas, Easter, summer and Halloween bake-sales, tea/coffee mornings and raffles. We also hold an Annual Ceilí in June. Throughout the year we provide funding for trips for Naíscoil/Gaelscoil. We contribute to Trócaire and other charities annually. We believe that this work shows our children to have empathy and compassion for those in societies who are less fortunate and in ill health. We are striving to inform the public within our area of the benefits of bilingualism and introducing them to the wonderful music, language and culture of the Gaels. We support the music initiative within Gaelscoil, a local musician gives lessons to the children on the tin-whistle. This experience enhances the children and allows them to learn more about our culture and the arts. We support the local Comhaltas through their weekly classes and the musicians can then show off their new talents by participating in, school assemblies, Christmas shows, Féile, Seisiún Ceoil and many private events. We are greatly supported by our committee and the general public. Without their support we would be unable to deliver new resources and classes which enhance the children in everyday learning activities and out of school activities. We are also hoping to host a summer scheme for children ages 3-11. We are currently negotiating with companies for support and donations. This would be a huge boost and would provide some mid-summer activities to children who may never get to experience summer schemes due to unemployment and low-income for families.
