Public benefits
The direct benefits of the charity are the supporting of projects which, through the use of non-traditional approaches to education, provide an opportunity for children who are otherwise denied access to learning to be educated to a standard which will enable them to move into traditional mainstream schools locally in their country. By providing
this basic level, children can develop knowledge and skills which will equip them for further education and/or employment which will improve their own lives and the lives of their communities. There is also a benefit for supporters in becoming aware of situations of need across the world and having an opportunity to support programmes to improve the quality of life for others. These benefits will be demonstrated through the International Board of Open Schools Worldwide’s robust monitoring and evaluation approach which is used to demonstrate to indigenous management boards and partner organisations across the world that the programmes make a beneficial impact on the individual lives of the children and their communities. In addition, individual grants made by OSWW (NI) will be identified in independently audited accounts in the countries of operation in addition to reports from co-ordinators on how the grants are applied. Grants by the charity are for specific identifiable activities and not general expenditure. The purposes of our charity may lead to harm insofar as the projects are delivered in areas of high social and economic deprivation, e.g. in shanty towns. Trustees or other people representing the charity visiting these projects may therefore be at risk of harm. The local project boards/co-ordinators have risk assessments and impact reduction plans already in place to care for those delivering the projects. These would be re-visited and amended as necessary to reflect any risk to “visitors”. Accordingly the Trustees believe that the risk of harm is minimal (not least because there will be very few and infrequent site visits); is managed effectively and is incidental to the benefit gained for the charity from first-hand experience of supported projects. The charity’s beneficiaries are children in situations where there is no other educational opportunity. While these have been mainly countries of the African sub-continent to date, the underlying educational strategy is capable of being adapted for delivery in any country; region or locality where traditional educational approaches are not available or have been disrupted by war or natural disaster.
