Public benefits
Purpose A The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include learning through play for the pre-school children; increased parental understanding of early years development in their children; and involvement of parents in their child’s development. These benefits are demonstrated through individual child development plans; monthly newsletter
explaining current teaching themes and advising parent how they can reinforce learning (eg learning about the seasons); annual end-of-year parent surveys; regular ETI inspections; and regular individual parent update meetings. This benefit does not lead to harm. The charity’s beneficiaries are pre-school children (those in the year before primary school and those in the year before that) living in the Banagher area and their parents/guardians. A perceived private benefit flowing from this purpose is that gained by a Trustee who also has a pre-school child at the Playgroup. This Trustee (living within the catchment area) applied for and was assigned a pre-school place in the same way as all other beneficiaries. This benefit is therefore incidental. Purpose B The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include increased parental understanding of early years childhood development and therefore increased early years development for the pre-school children both at home and by encouraging them to attend the Playgroup. These benefits are demonstrated through our AGM to which all parents and the community are invited; an annual open day to which parents/carers of children; annual end-of-year parent surveys, regular individual parent update meetings and consistent numbers of children registering to attend the Playgroup. This benefit does not lead to harm. The charity’s beneficiaries for this purpose are the parents and guardians of the pre-school children attending the Playgroup and also within the wider community. There is no private benefit arising from this purpose. Purpose C The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include increased parental involvement in their child’s early years development and increased community involvement by parents to support the Playgroup and the children attending. These benefits are demonstrated through parental involvement in the fundraising group and fundraising events and parental involvement in Playgroup activities such as special event days. In addition, the Playgroup encourages parents/carers and children to think about supporting other charities and we hold a fundraiser each year for a charity chosen by the parents (eg Marie Curie). This benefit does not lead to harm. The charity’s beneficiaries for this purpose are the pre-school children attending the Playgroup. There is no private benefit arising from this purpose. Purpose D The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are an increase in early years development for the pre-school children and support for their parents and guardians. These benefits are demonstrated through individual child development plans and reviews; annual end-of-year parent surveys; regular ETI and Social Services inspections; and regular individual parent update meetings. There is no harm arising from this benefit. The charity’s beneficiaries are pre-school children and their parents/guardians living in the Banagher area. A private benefit to Trustees may arise from the ongoing training provided by the Playgroup and Early Years in line with good governance. This training covers matters such as governance, human resources management, funding applications and finance. Through this training Trustees gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure that Trustees have the skills and knowledge to fulfil their roles within the Playgroup adequately and ensure that the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
The Playgroup provides a pre-school education for 3-4 year-olds in the Banagher area (part-time, 5 mornings per week) and a small number of pre-pre-school places for other part-time children. We follow the Department of Education's Early Years curriculum and are affiliated with Early Years (the organisation). We employ 4 part-time staff to
deliver our service. Each day begins at 9.15am with 1 hour's free play in which the children can move around the different areas within the Playgroup (eg home corner, sand table). There is then a 15 minute buffet break which encourages healthy eating and helps children to learn to pour their own milk and butter their own bread. There is 15 minutes of large group time in which the children come together to enjoy music, movement, drama, rhymes and storytelling. The final session is outdoor play in our purpose-built area, helping children to develop gross motor skills and activities such as gardening. We also encourage visitors to support learning (eg meeting a teacher, a nurse and baking activities). The children undertake a number of visits during the year (eg to the local library, nature walks and fun farm) and we hold an annual sports day for children and parents. The Trustees meet once a month and a parents' Friends of the Playgroup group meets every 2 months to plan fundraising activities and input into Playgroup activities such as trips and visits. We also work with the local primary school to support the children as they transition at their end of their pre-school year. We work closely with our parents and wider community (eg grandparents, neighbours etc). We are inspected by the ETI and WHSST on a regular basis - our most recent inspections were in 2014 and we received a 'Very Good' rating. The Playgroup Leader also engages with Leaders from other local playgroups for learning and sharing of knowledge.
