Public benefits

Purpose 1 - To promote the benefit of the inhabitants of the area, to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare, education, recreation or other leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants. Benefits flowing from this include increased knowledge, awareness

and confidence in the local community, a reduction in social isolation and the attendant health and well-being associated with increased community participation. Benefits also include increased capacity within our group and the other groups we work with through the provision of training, support and mentoring. Further benefit associated with this purpose is an increased engagement with other groups and statutory agencies, especially by groups who may not otherwise engage in mainstream community development initiatives. Purpose 2 - To promote and educate in the Ulster Scots tradition and cultures and other indigenous cultures. Benefits flowing from this purpose include increased cultural awareness and understanding achieved by the delivery of tuition classes, talks and workshops. The resulting increased knowledge and confidence in identity allows for future positive engagement with other cultures and communities. There is no identifiable harm flowing from the above purposes and any private benefit such as volunteer training is incidental and necessary to achieve the aims of our group. Benefit to people in Cloughmills and area is demonstrated by positive feed-back received from users of our services and those who attend our events and activities. It is also demonstrated by continued growth in community involvement by local people and increased community pride and confidence.

What your organisation does

Our group has been working in the village since 2005 and we have been involved in many varied projects including securing a major upgrade to the local Orange Hall, which now provides a base for local groups, including ourselves, to meet and hold their activities. Some of the training we have delivered in the local community includes first-aid,

computer classes, media awareness, fire safety awareness, craft and good relations training, amongst others. We have co-operated with other groups to deliver music tuition including flute, accordion, drum, fife and lambeg drum. The wide range of activities appeals to the entire community and all age groups, meaning people can come together to share mutual interests and learning in a safe, inviting environment and build relationships which are carried over into community life. In developing our activity programmes we endeavour to address needs identified by the community and involve everyone, especially people from the rural community who are at increased risk of social isolation. There is an increased sense of community pride and confidence within the village and surrounding areas, with more people coming forward all the time to take part in activities.
