Public benefits
The purpose of The Committee is to advance the education of the public concerning Orange/Unionist history and culture and to preserve and protect the heritage and traditions of the Orange Institution/Unionist community with a view to securing appreciation of said heritage and traditions by means of exhibits, research, study, or other such means
charitable in law. The beneficiaries are potentially any member of the general public who is interested in learning about the subject. The direct benefits flowing to them are: • An increased knowledge and understanding of Orange history and culture • A valuable archive (historical and current) of items, documents and articles pertaining to Orange history and culture is available for scholarly research and public viewing • The hall acts as a “living culture” repository where members of the wider unionist community can access and develop, through talks, educational programmes and structured interaction with items and artefacts, an understanding of the connections between history and identity • Members of the Orange Orders, and particularly those lodges and groups meeting in the Hall, have access to a rich physical environment and to learning support around it. These benefits can be demonstrated through – • Members of the public acquiring a greater understanding of Orange Culture which has a long and standing significance in Belfast and in Northern Ireland, and contributing to a wider dialogue and understanding. • A deeper understanding of history being supported by the resources and archive held at the hall, availing academic research, and most importantly, contributing to the “rootedness” of Orange Culture. • A sense of Belonging for a community that often feels threatened and isolated in times of difficulty. The committee’s purpose and works are profoundly based around the preservation of this valuable physical, educational/intellectual and ,indeed, spiritual resource for all of those wishing to access it. The benefits of its works are incidental to any particularly identified groups, organisations, institutions or individuals regularly using the building. The committee has long standing mechanisms for the consideration of risk and harm and deems that its work is of minimal harm and outweighed by the benefits it provides in learning, culture and the opportunities for engagement and dialogue.

The Belfast Orange Hall is a grade II listed building and boasts the only equestrian statue in Northern Ireland astride it's cornice. The work of the Architect William Batt the hall is unique to our shores. Part of the fabric of this building is a fully functioning museum which attracts some thousands of visitors each year and the collection is one
of the largest of its kind in Ireland, displaying the rich culture and heritage of those members of that community. The Belfast Buildings Preservation trust partnering us. The Hall would be used by those from the protestant faith. Part of our story is to tell of our faith and present it to others in various means. Working with bodies such as the youth prosecution service, the 147 trust, the Junior Orange Lodges, police initiatives our calender is busy hosting cross community groups and those who would describe themselves as combatants all frequent the hall. These last few years we continue to work with our neighbors in The Indian Community. Our buildings physical neighbours, but more importantly our neighbours in humanity with whom we bridge our two communities. We also work with the scouts and other youth groups and it would be our intention to further develop a relationship with local schools. The mission of our outreach team is to teach good citizenship by acceptance of our culture but also tolerance of others. Whilst we do not organise parades relating to the Orange Order we are in a unique position to dialogue between communities during contentious parades. These parades leave our hall and are planned in our hall. It is from this position that we are able to meet with police and work to ensure we play our part to help these pass off peacefully and with as little confrontation as possible.
