Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of our organisation are an increased knowledge and awareness our Ulster-Scots culture and identity within the Kingdom of Mourne, Ulster and beyond with a specific focus on the art of traditional fiddle and its relevance within Ulster-Scots heritage. Through training, workshops and events organised by

the Schomberg Folk Orchestra, many people both locally and from further afield obtain experience and qualifications in the music, history and culture of the Ulster-Scots identity and enjoy many of the social activities associated with the group. These accredited qualifications provide both young and mature students with the necessary qualifications in the traditional fiddle to become tutors and embassadors of the Ulster-Scots identity in the future. As a result of participation as a member in Schomberg Folk Orchestra, this also benefits our students by providing them with the necessary experience to become involved with other traditional fiddle groups in the future. Benefits of the Schomberg Folk Orchestra are evidenced through the large numbers of people attending our events including concerts, summer schools, workshops, training courses and other activities which have been well documented in both the local press and media and through regular evaluations and monitoring. We can see no harm by any of the purposes of our charity. The charity’s beneficiaries are the general public in the Kingdom of Mourne, Ulster and beyond. The only private benefits from our purpose in the Schomberg Folk Orchestra is that students and young people gain qualifications and the necessary experience required to become professional tutors and musicians in other folk groups in the future.

What your organisation does

Schomberg Folk Orchestra organises a variety of educational outreach projects, particularly in local schools, youth clubs, summer schools and church youth fellowships; which every year shows an increased demand for fiddle tuition in our location which would be central and safe for young folk to avail of in Reivers House. Our students complete

accredited examinations which have improved their musical ability and higher grades being achieved, which opens new opportunities for them in the future. Our students and membership also gain an understanding and knowledge of our Ulster-Scots culture and identity through various workshops and discussions which are held as part of our educational outreach. The Kingdom of Mourne regularly hosts Ulster-Scots events, including Burns Night Celebrations, festivals, Soirees, concerts, educational workshops, talks and debates, along with outside charitable events etc., and this is something which our Schomberg Folk Orchestra is involved with in order to highlight the Ulster-Scots fiddle playing aspect to our local community and further afield.
