Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of our organisation are an increased knowledge and awareness of our Ulster-Scots identity of our history and heritage within the Kingdom of Mourne, Ulster and beyond with a specific focus on the art of highland and lowland dance. Through training, workshops and events organised by the group, many
people both locally and from further afield obtain experience and qualifications in the music, history and culture of the Ulster-Scots identity and enjoy many of the social activities associated with the group, particularly as the group is very pro active in the community. These benefits are evidenced through the large numbers of people attending our events including concerts, summer schools, workshops, competitions, training courses and other activities which have been well documented in both the local press and media and through regular evaluations and monitoring. We can see no harm by any of the purposes of our charity. The charity’s beneficiaries are the general public in the Kingdom of Mourne, Ulster and beyond. The only private benefits from our purpose is that students and young people gain qualifications and the necessary experience required to become professional tutors and embassadors for the Ulster-Scots cultural traditions in the near future.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
The Kirknarra School of Dance does and has for over a decade played a prominent role in the promotion of Ulster-Scots culture within the local Kilkeel and Mourne based social scene as well as on a much larger scale accross Northern Ireland and indeed overseas. On an annual basis for the past ten years we have performed at the local annual Burns
Night celebrations, on stage at the July Summer Reivers Festival, at The Hannas Close Soiree, in local old folks homes at Christmas/new-years, at private Birthday parties, at local Kilkeel & Annalong Church fundraising events as well as at various Girls Brigade displays and in local Primary and High school concerts, at other charitable fund-raising events (lifeboat day) and also at several local Newry & Mourne District Council run and funded events. We have also organised and held our own Ulster-Scots Summer School as well as dance workshop days in local Kilkeel and Annalong based festivals as well as running our own Highland Dance competitions under the approved auspices of the Royal Scottish Highland Dance Society. At all of these events we wear traditional Highland Dance costumes and we explain the significance of the various dances performed to our audiences.
